IAC DOORS AND STUDIOS FOR THE BBC AT MEDIA CITY

IAC has supplied 39 high performance acoustic doors for the BBC’s buildings at the huge new ‘Media City’ under construction in Manchester.

The initial 36-acre site (the size of 18 football pitches) in Salford Quays will contain office space; a studio block; retail and leisure space; 378 apartments; a hotel; a piazza, and more. This ‘sustainable’ new city will be served by cycle lanes and trams.

Phase 1 is due for completion in 2011. The city will gradually come to life during the early part of the year, as the studios host their first live shows, people settle into their new offices, and bars and restaurants welcome their first customers.

The BBC’s Building C is now complete and has 22 IAC single STC-51 acoustic doors, featuring a combination of specialist ironmongery and design features, including swipe card systems, large acoustic vision panels and low reflective glazing where required. In addition IAC has also supplied 1 sliding acoustic door to office spaces, and 2 Bi-Fold Quad leaf doors – a new product. These custom-designed folding doors offer a 4-leaf assembly spanning a 4m-wide space, allowing the clients the choice of folding back to open up, or to close off the Green Room space which sits between the two new ‘5 Live’ Studios.

Buildings A & B are still in progress and will have a total of 13 single STC-51 doors, 1 Bi-Fold Quad leaf door, and 1 double STC-51 door.

Kane Watkinson is IAC’s Product Manager for Acoustic Doors. “We have a long history of supplying the BBC. Our acoustic doors are in many of their main broadcast buildings UK-wide including the 27 cutting edge studios we installed at their Mailbox TV facility in central Birmingham, and many regional radio stations around the nation.”

IAC CHINA’S NEW SALES AND MARKETING MANAGER VISITS EUROPE

IAC Winchester recently played host to IAC China’s new Sales and Marketing Manager, Derek Li, during a 5-day product familiarization visit to Europe.

Derek, who joined IAC China in September, is an experienced sales manager with an impressive track record in sales of engineered equipment for OEMs and project management. He is fluent in English and has an Australian passport.

Following 2 days with IAC Boet Stopson in France for familiarization with Power products, Derek, was given full training in Winchester on the full range of products. This included a Factory Tour followed by a briefing from Kane Watkinson on doors and windows. Anna Morton and Shaun Moore spent time with Derek on Audiology and Studios. Derek was also taken through Building Services and Acoustic Test products as well as receiving a full briefing on enquiry processing, pricing, quotations and how orders are secured.

Geoff Crowhurst, Director of Acoustics said : “Derek is full of enthusiasm about the marketing operations he is implementing in China. Him speaking fluent English is invaluable and it meant we were able to give him a thorough overview during his visit to help support his operations back home.“

IAC AMERICA’S STUDIOS FOR NEW YORK’S KMA MUSIC

IAC America has installed a custom modular acoustic studio for world-renowned KMA Music in New York.

KMA is located close to Times Square in the Brill Building which houses many of the world’s largest music publishers. KMA Music aims to deliver a first-class recording experience for every genre.

For this new studio, the level of sound isolation was going to be a key factor in its success, while the available space was very limited. The challenge was to optimise the recording area space while maintaining the highest level of noise isolation between rooms. It was a perfect candidate for IAC’s AccuTone2 Broadcast Series Rooms and Noise-Lock acoustic doors and windows.

IAC provided lightweight modular Broadcast Series rooms with NIC 70 isolation while using two IAC 100mm AccuTone2 panels.

Fran Manzella of famous studio designers, FM Design - after working with Michael Kissel at KMA Music Studios - had the following to say about this unique IAC facility, “The Writers Studio, as we call it, is Michael’s brainchild. He envisioned a co-operative arrangement with young writer and producers to enable them to realize their creative projects within a world-class stimulating environment.”

The broadcast and recording industries have long recognised the design and financial benefits of modular studios. Now, IAC America’s AccuTone2 Broadcast Series newest family of modular sound-conditioned environments adds the look and feel of traditional architecture to sound control rooms and suites that can be custom-designed for any application. And, they are engineered for high in-field noise reduction, greater comfort, and enhanced performance.

TOP COVENT GARDEN DEVELOPMENT CHOOSES IAC ACOUSTIC LOUVRE ENCLOSURES

A prestigious, high density mixed-use development in London’s Covent Garden will benefit from five acoustic louvre enclosures from IAC for plant rooms. A major urban regeneration project, St Martin’s Courtyard will comprise 25 new retail outlets; 5 restaurants; 70,000 sq ft of premium office space, and 37 luxury apartments.

Architects SCH, and MR Partnership have combined a redevelopment of several 1960s buildings in what has been a 4-phase project. Main contractor, Wates, commissioned the acoustic enclosures for plant rooms installed in phases C, D and E. Three are located in roof-top positions, one on the ground floor and one on the 3rd floor. The enclosures will shield shoppers, residents and other users of the site from plant noise.

Gary Dawson, Manager, Building Services, said: “We have a longstanding relationship with Wates, and to be supplying such a high profile London project at a time when competition is fierce is testament to our value-for-money bespoke products.”

The courtyard will be unveiled to the public in Spring 2010.

IAC NORDIC’S AUDIOLOGY BREAKTHROUGH

During the last few months IAC Nordic has successfully secured contracts for a number of Modular Audiometric Test Rooms and booths throughout Scandinavia, including 3 leading centres of clinical excellence.

When it comes to state-of-the-art Audiometric Rooms in the Scandinavian market, IAC are leaders – offering unrivalled performance and quality.

At the new Akershus Hospital in the Norwegian capital Oslo, the installation of 5 audiometric rooms will be finished before Christmas. The sound and vibration insulation demands for these rooms are very high because they are located just next to the main internal lobby and corridor in this brand new hospital. These rooms are replacing 5 existing rooms built only 3 years ago. Because they were constructed in traditional construction materials, these existing rooms could not live up to the high acoustical demands of the clinicians.

Early in the New Year the installation of 3 audiometric rooms will begin at Helsingborg Hospital in Sweden. A small audiology booth is destined for each of two private hearing clinics elsewhere in the country – these will be delivered before Christmas.

Lars Birch Nielsen is IAC Nordic’s General Manager: “We have had a very active autumn and are delighted with the take up of this product range. Here at home, Denmark is no exception - with 2 booths installed at a private clinic in Herning, and a contract win from a school for children with hearing disabilities. As a case in point regarding the wide range of applications for our workplace test facilities, we have also secured a contract for further booth for the testing of pilots’ hearing at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen’s University Hospital. We’ll be installing this just after New Year. Roll on 2010!”
