IAC AVIATION’S
‘STAR’ ATTRACTION AT AEROSPACE TESTING EXPO 2004
Award-winning,
unique mobile helicopter engine testing platform – the Mobile Test
Facility from world-leading engine testing suppliers, IAC Aviation of
the UK - will be making its debut at the Show. On display in the Live
Demonstration Area in Hall 2 Lower, visitors will be able to enter the
operator’s cabin and meet IAC’s engine test facilities’
designers. Show organisers predict the MTF will be one of the Show’s
star visitor attractions. Ian Stone, Event Director said, “It’s
great to be the first to offer a ‘live’ demonstration of the
MTF and, given that it’s such a complementary exhibit, it’s
bound to make quite an impact!“
The MTF’s primary
benefit is that it allows engine testing on location in a war theatre,
saving valuable time and manpower resources. It is completely self sufficient
with on-board power generation and can operate anywhere, anytime.
Exacting MOD requirements
The MTF was developed
for the Ministry of Defence to support the new RTM322 helicopter engine
that is entering into service across all British armed forces. Already
commissioned at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, the MTF is soon to be rolled
out to RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall.
Engine variants
The MTFs so far supplied
support both the Mk100 ‘Merlin’, Mk100, Mk250 and Mk200 ‘Support’
RTM322 engine variants. These engines are utilised in the Royal Navy’s
and the RAF’s versions of the EH101 helicopter. Other RTM322 variants
(i.e. Apache and NH90) and/or other turbo-shaft engine types, can be easily
accommodated as can engines such as the T700, T800, Gnome and Gem.
The MTF tests the
new engine to flight idle speed with a full load performance option also
available. While the first MTF requires ground support equipment, MTFs
now have as standard an onboard air starter and high performance running
gear.
Maximum operator
support
The MTF’s additional
features include an air conditioned Acoustic Control Room with full-width
bullet-resistant viewing window, while the computerised Data Acquisition
System gives the operator access to all engine and facility parameters
Black Box Event Logs, and integral Alarm with Automated Engine Shutdown.
Patrick Fourcampre-Maye
is IAC Aviation’s product manager and has worked on the project
since its inception in 2001. “The MTF has been very well received
as the first of its kind available and we’ll be developing many
more variants. The signs are that it’s going to make a sizeable
impact in the testing environment. The direct feedback we’ll get
from visitors at the Show will be a good indicator, too.
“At IAC Aviation
we’re into innovation, developing products that engineers in the
field really need. The [Bond Pearce] Innovation Award we received for
the MTF a few months ago in our regional business awards was a real thrill!”
