IAC Germany’s test bench silencers for Rolls-Royce
IAC Germany has supplied 12 test bench silencers for Rolls-Royce’s state-of-the-art £63m Mechanical Test Operations Centre (MTOC) at Dahlewitz near Berlin.
MTOC tests next-generation aviation aggregates destined for the highly sensitive aeroengines of the future such as the Trent XWB and engines of the BR700 family, the first German, civil ray engines. The Centre was officially opened on 4 May 2010 by Germany’s Home Secretary and Sir John Rose, CEO of Rolls-Royce.
Rolls-Royce Germany employs over 3,000 people at its two locations: Dahlewitz, and Oberursel near Frankfurt/Main.
The Test Centre houses, amongst other facilities, 12 test cells constructed from double-skin concrete. Their supply and exhaust air systems are so conceived that maximum noise emissions of up to 140 dB(A) are halved to around = 70dB(A) with the use of IAC silencers. The latter are of bespoke construction, fabricated from stainless steel in order to withstand heavy use.
The contract was awarded by main contractor Klebl, for whom IAC GmbH has undertaken many projects over the years. IAC had worked with project planners Iproplan on the designs for the Centre’s test cells so, combined with previous experience with Klebl, IAC was best choice for the supply of the silencers. Required both to deliver and install in record time, it was just seven weeks from receipt of the order to the silencers’ installation.
“Manufacturing had to take place over what would normally have been the holiday period at the turn of the year,” said Volker Horchens, General Manager, IAC GmbH, commenting on the contract’s project management challenges which involved in sourcing over 35 tonnes of high-grade steel and 1,800m² of mineral wool as well as staffing issues. “It felt good to know that we met Rolls-Royce’s deadlines and that the silencers actually achieve better attenuation than specified. This was our first project for the company in Germany and now we are in a good position to win others.”
