IAC Barriers Shield Neighbours Of ‘Powergate’ Data Storage Centre
Data storage giant, Telecity, now has a full-perimeter noise barrier from noise control leader, IAC, to protect the neighbours of their new Data Storage Centre in West London.
The new Centre is on the Powergate Business Park in Acton and the IAC noise control solution protects the Centre’s neighbouring community from chiller noise.
The Powergate building has an open grid floor throughout, with generators below and the chiller plant above.
The facefix barrier surrounds all four sides of the building and comprises steel supports and acoustic panels with integrated Model R acoustic louvres. The enclosure is 50m long x 20m wide and designed to house ten 2.5MVA Gensets at ground level and a similar number of chillers sitting on a mezzanine level. There is a 6m x 20m raised section at one end designed to take the oil tanks.
Scott Simmons is IAC’s Barriers Manager: “Along one side of the enclosure we designed 5 removable ‘plugs’ each measuring 8.5m wide x 4m high, which enable future gensets to be manoeuvred into the compound. Should any genset fail at some stage, this makes removal easy.” Especially designed for the Powergate Centre, the barrier is particularly attractive as we designed in concealed fixings at all points along its length.”
Due to the project complexity of the project IAC was awarded a full turnkey package and made responsible for not only the supply and installation of 1200m² of acoustic panels and louvers but also the supply and erection of the main 180-tonne steel structure. Along with the provision of a 15-tonne steel gantry to link the compound to the main building, IAC’s site work was completed within 8 weeks.
The large chiller plant in the building is crucial to protecting the data servers from variations in ambient temperature which could lead to the loss of valuable data. Telecity stores data on behalf of from many internet-centric businesses in the City – whose connectivity requirements necessitate Data Centres’ close proximity to their centres of operation. Telecity now operates 8 Data Storages Centres in the London area.
