Six Super-Pods for Heathrow Terminal 5
Six Super-Pods from IAC are destined for London’s Heathrow Airport. These convenient acoustic environments for Terminal 5 will benefit Ramp personnel working on and around the airport aprons and will be used for in situ meetings and work distribution planning.
Scott Simmons is Product Manager at IAC UK: “Within the global IAC group we have over 50 years’ experience in the manufacture and construction of portable, sound-controlled people environments. Not only are these pleasant work environments but they will bring British Airways’ Operations Managers to the Ramp personnel rather than the other way round. This is of huge benefit in efficiency terms. Early statistics around work improvements resulting from our 63 Fli-pod Head of Stand Units already in use at Heathrow show a massive 30% increase in worker efficiency. That translates into savings of £100,000s a year. We are anticipating demand from around the world for this product.”
Three of the Super-Pods are for the main terminal and 3 for the B satellite terminal. Supersized variations on the IAC Fli-Pod acoustic Head of Stand Unit, the Super-Pod structure provides top-class noise reduction and a pleasant work environment for up to 14 workers, in close proximity to taxiing aircraft.
Each Pod measures 10m long, 3.5m wide and 3.5m in height. With a private management office area, main work / meeting area and discreet plant room, each has 4 acoustic windows positioned along each side with blue tinted ‘solar’ glass to reduce heat gain inside.
The 10-tonne Super-Pods were manufactured at the group’s European manufacturing centre in Winchester for delivery to the site by escorted lorry, and craned into position at night when the runways were closed. More aesthetically-pleasing than alternative portable buildings, the Pods are also more in keeping with the attractive airport buildings.
Fully acoustically and thermally insulated, robust and weatherproof, the accommodation has high performance (R’w 48 dB), fire-rated, acoustic doors and windows, air conditioning and a PIR, energy efficient lighting system. Each is internally fitted out with high spec. bespoke joinery and worktops and is all pre-wired for network data and comms, ready for use. The interior is ergonomically-designed with concealed cabling, wear-resistant wall finishes and rubber flooring – which are all environmentally-compliant.
With an upfront 4-week design and manufacture period each Pod takes 3 weeks to build, with the 6 being called off weekly, one at a time.
Built onto an integral structural base frame the Super-Pods are factory built and commissioned then road-transported and craned into position onto anti-vibration isolation pads. Due to their size, road transportation will take place at night and the main runway will serve as access route to their apron positions.
