100s OF IAC QUIET-DUCT SILENCERS SILENCE BSKYB
IAC Building Services has secured a major order for the supply of hundreds of Quiet-Duct Silencers for the BSKYB TV Studio project located in Osterley, West London.
IAC’s silencers are often imitated but their acoustic performance is never matched. It is this, and acoustic consultants Arup Acoustics’ confidence in IAC’s published aero-acoustic data, that led to them specifying IAC’s products.
The BSKYB building has a floor area of 23,000m2 and will comprise eight TV studios and post production facilities for 600 staff with both natural and mechanical ventilation. To ensure minimum noise break-in/out in some cases the silencers will be double skinned, and the under-floor silencers will have removable elements to facilitate cleaning. The natural ventilation chimneys for the building will be fitted with IAC Noishield Louvres.
The order was secured by Mike Jackson, Sales Manager, Building Services: “Arup Acoustics have long recognised that our products do what they say on the tin, and it was this, along with our longstanding trading relationship with the successful contractor Hotchkiss, that enabled us to clinch this order. The competition was stiff but when it comes to quality, we’ve definitely got the edge.”
Deliveries commenced in mid August and installation is scheduled for completion by March 2009.

IAC AVIATION WINS £3M TEST CELL REFURBISHMENT FOR ROLLS-ROYCE
Rolls-Royce, Bristol has commissioned IAC Aviation to undertake a major aero-engine test cell refurbishment in a contract worth nearly £3M.
IAC Aviation has been commissioned by the Hyde Group to undertake a major aero-engine test facility refurbishment programme for Rolls-Royce, Bristol across three cells, in a contract worth nearly £3M with a duration of 18 months. This is the first joint bid performed by IAC and Hyde.
The Rolls Royce plant at Bristol has previously been used for the development of military aircraft engines but, in what is a new move for the manufacturer, the three test cells are to be refurbished by IAC for use in the design and development of the new RB282 civil aircraft engine for corporate jets. The test cells will be used in the pre-production phase to fine tune the engine design.
Cliff Brindley the Rolls Royce Business Manager, at IAC says: “Rolls-Royce’ has only contracted two major test facility refurbishment projects over the past three years and we have successfully secured both. This is all great news for IAC and our suppliers, especially in the current uncertain economic climate.”

IAC’S AUDIOLOGY DIVISION EXHIBITS AT EUROPEAN HEARING AID FAIR
IAC’s Audiology booths and suites were the focus of an IAC exhibition stand at this year’s International Congress of Hearing Aid Acousticians held in Leipzig, Germany in October. The trade fair element of the event attracted over 8,000 delegates from all over the world.
IAC UK’s Jason Saunders, European Audiology Business Manager along with Product Manager Ian Rich and IAC GmbH’s Sales Manager, Doris Gohs attended the fair.
Jason Saunders said: “This was the second time that we have attended the event, following our success last year in Nuernberg and once again it proved very worthwhile.
Our stand attracted many 100’s of visitors and we crossed the channel home with a very good quantity of leads from hospitals and clinics right across Europe and the Middle East. These leads will be followed up by our European network of representatives that we have been establishing over the past 12 months, all of which are well equipped to undertake the design, supply and installation of IAC’s modular Audiology facilities.”
CAPITAL’S UNIVERSITY CHOOSES CROSS TALK SILENCERS
Classrooms and corridors within London’s South Bank University will be quieter thanks to cross talk silencers from IAC.
Over 200 Cross-Talk Silencers in a wide range of sizes are being installed in classrooms and corridors in the new-build university. These will provide natural ventilation combined with a high degree of acoustic performance.
IAC is a global leader in noise control for HVAC, is the preferred supplier of top M&E and Acoustic consultants and specifiers. All IAC’s silencers are fully lab tested and have guaranteed acoustic performance.
Cross Talk Silencers effectively prevent noise from passing from one space to another through vents provided for the passage of air. These are Type S silencers and are specially designed for Vent Shaft installations – where noxious or stale passes through the silencer from each room served by the common shaft and is vented outside the building. The acoustical construction of the Type S unit blocks noise from passing into the shaft and areas connected to it; however it permits the passage of exhaust air. The silencer also prevents exhaust fan noise from entering the rooms served but the shaft. Grilles are available and all types can be supplied unpainted or finish painted as required.
Gary Dawson is Product Manager Building Services at IAC: “Natural ventilation is preferred by many educational establishments these days but classrooms need to be quiet. Our Cross Talk silencers satisfy both requirements and help create environments conducive to learning.”

IAC BARRIERS SHIELD NEIGHBOURS OF ‘POWERGATE’ DATA STORAGE CENTRE
Data storage giant, Telecity, commissioned a full-perimeter noise barrier to protect the neighbours of their new Data Storage Centre in West London this summer.
The new Centre is on the Powergate Business Park in Acton and the IAC noise control solution protects the Centre’s neighbouring community from chiller noise.
The Powergate building has an open grid floor throughout, with generators below and the chiller plant above.
The facefix barrier surrounds all four sides of the building and comprises steel supports and acoustic panels with integrated Model R acoustic louvres. The enclosure is 50m long x 20m wide and designed to house ten 2.5MVA Gensets at ground level and a similar number of chillers sitting on a mezzanine level. There is a 6m x 20m raised section at one end designed to take the oil tanks.
Scott Simmons is IAC’s Barriers Manager: “Along one side of the enclosure we designed 5 removable ‘plugs’ each measuring 8.5m wide x 4m high, which enable future gensets to be manoeuvred into the compound. Should any genset fail at some stage, this makes removal easy.” Especially designed for the Powergate Centre, the barrier is particularly attractive as we designed in concealed fixings at all points along its length.”
Due to the project complexity of the project IAC was awarded a full turnkey package and made responsible for not only the supply and installation of 1200m² of acoustic panels and louvers but also the supply and erection of the main 180-tonne steel structure. Along with the provision of a 15-tonne steel gantry to link the compound to the main building, IAC’s site work was completed within 8 weeks.
The large chiller plant in the building is crucial to protecting the data servers from variations in ambient temperature which could lead to the loss of valuable data. Telecity stores data on behalf of from many internet-centric businesses in the City – whose connectivity requirements necessitate Data Centres’ close proximity to their centres of operation. Telecity now operates 8 Data Storages Centres in the London area.

IAC SPONSORS RUSSELL LANCASTER’S CHARITY SKYDIVE
IAC UK employee Russell Lancaster gallantly made a sponsored Skydive and raised £680 for children with cerebral palsy this summer.
Russell works as part of the Stores and Goods Team at our European manufacturing facility in Winchester. IAC sponsored him to the tune of £225 for the Jump Fee so that he could raise funds for The Rainbow Centre for Conductive Education in Fareham, Hampshire. These special children and not supported by any government funding and the Charity helps children to become more independent. Many have cerebral palsy which struck a chord for Russell as his partner has 5 family members with the condition.
Russell’s tandem skydive consisted of a 35-second freefall and five-minute canopy ride. He made the jump from 10,000 feet above Netheravon, Salisbury after being given instruction by the Army Parachute Association. He found the experience exhilarating.
Russell said: “When a friend who works in a school for children with disabilities showed me a flier about the fundraising skydive, I leapt at is as I’ve always wanted to jump out of an aircraft! It was an absolutely fantastic experience! The most nerve-wracking part was going up in the plane beforehand. Once I was strapped to the 150lb man for the jump, I didn’t have much choice! The free fall was a total assault on the senses.” He added that he would love to do it again!
Russell is a member of the Operations Division’s Transport and can be contacted on 01962 873026 russelll@iacl.co.uk
IAC AMERICA SHIELDS LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN COMMUNITIES FROM RAILROAD NOISE
Two communities affected by railroad noise near LAX Airport in California are enjoying quieter lives thanks to a FS Noishield Barrier from IAC America.
Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Metro Green-Line light rail transportation system runs south near LAX Airport. The noise generated from the rail cars was affecting the residents of Hawthorn and Segundo California.
Woodward Clyde Engineering selected IAC FS Noishield Barrier panels as the noise control product of choice for the elevated structures in these two communities. The IAC FS Noishield Barrier panels were ideal for this application due to their acoustic performance, their light weight construction and ease of installation. IAC America also supplied IAC SFS Noishield Septum/Barrier panels to be installed between Metro Green-line tracks in one area to provide absorptive treatment for both sides of the barrier system. These were to protect an office building immediately adjacent to the track structure.
IAC, in partnership with the IAC representative CE Pickup, the acoustical consultant - Woodward Clyde Engineering and Metro Builders & Engineers, together designed and installed the Barrier System. Approximately ¾ of a mile long x 20 feet high the Barrier System was installed from a high rail truck using a small hoist. There was down time for the transportation authority.
Each 5” thick Barrier panel is self-draining and the absorptive side is rated NRC 1.05. The rugged panels are easy to install and available in 24” and 18” heights up to 16’ long. The panels go through a five-step cleaning process and are factory-finished with tough, thermosetting polyester powder coat available in hundreds of colors and patterns.
The Metro Green-Line Light Rail project won a design award for California cities. The residents and city officials in both communities were very pleased with the results achieved by the IAC Barrier System.
