‘YOUNG PERSONS’ AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN ACOUSTICAL ENGINEERING 2011’ WELCOMES NOMINATIONS

Looking back at 2007’s winner Background to the Award

Young Persons Award for Innovation in Acoustical EngineeringAcousticians under the age of 35 or with no more than 5 years’ experience in the industry are invited to enter the Institute of Acoustics’ 2011 ‘Young Persons’ Award for Innovation in Acoustical Engineering’. Sponsored by IAC, the biennial prize was first awarded in 2005.

Entering is straightforward. Acousticians from industry, consultancy and academia may either nominate themselves or be nominated by a third party. After the closing date of 31 January 2011 the distinguished panel of judges drawn from academia and industry will select a winner.

Members of this year’s judging panel include:

Richard Perkins MIOA Chairman of the IOA Engineering Division and Technical Director – Acoustics, Parsons Brinckerhoff

Professor Stephen Elliott FIOA Director and Professor of Adaptive Systems, Signal Processing and Control Group within the Institute of Sound Vibration and Research at Southampton University.

Geoff Crowhurst MIOA Director, Acoustics Division, Industrial Acoustics Company

President of the Institute of Acoustics, Trevor Cox, said: “Acoustics is a massively broad discipline, impacting many areas of industry, construction, transport, medicine, broadcasting, entertainment and more. This Award recognises the inventiveness and acumen of younger people in the sector, and the contribution their ideas and technical excellence are making. We want to celebrate their innovative and practical acoustical engineering solutions, their enthusiasm and the enormous contribution they are making to society.”

Judges will be looking for entries that are: innovative and inventive; feasible and practicable; money-saving; green; end-user friendly; time-saving; and/or improvements to existing processes.

The winner of the Award will have their name engraved on the prestigious solid silver trophy and receive a solid silver replica to keep. In addition, their prize provided by sponsors IAC, will comprise a luxury weekend break for two in Milan with £500 to spend.

The prize will be presented at the IOA’s Autumn Conference in November 2011.
