December 2009

Welcome to our latest e-Bulletin.

It has been an exciting first year as part of the global IAC Group, and we’ve been busy introducing many more world-class noise control products into the Australian market.

We are delighted with the market’s response, not surprising in that IAC products excel in terms of quality and offer the best acoustic performance available.

As we look forward to 2010 please know that your support is much appreciated. I assure you of our commitment to providing best value and best performance whatever your noise control solutions requirements.

Best wishes as we prepare for the Christmas season.

Kind regards.

LIEBHERR 996 EXCAVATORS RECEIVE IAC COLPRO HIGH PERFORMANCE EXHAUST SILENCERS

IAC Colpro has secured another order for high performance exhaust silencers for 650-tonne Liebherr 996 excavators. The giant excavators will be used at the Moorlarben and Mount Arthur coalmines in NSW. This is the fourth of such orders received this year.

Each excavator requires 2 support mounting frames, and 4 silencers each with dust extraction and heatshield extensions. The silencers are installed in pairs. Each engine set assembly has overall dimensions: 1,700mm wide x 2,900mm deep x 2170mm high.

The high performance silencers and mounting frames fit within the standard heatshield footprint, due to their requirement for high performance while providing ready maintenance access to the engine compartments. The heatshield is extended vertically with the use of an adaptor skirt.

“We were originally approached by Mount Arthur Coal, which operates three Liebherr 996 excavators,” said Paul Godbold, General Manager. “They were extremely happy with the package we provided and were immediately identifying their next maintenance window, to enable us to outfit another machine.”

IAC COLPRO WINS HIGH PERFORMANCE EXHAUST SYSTEM CONTRACT FOR SUPERSIZE KOMATSU MINING TRUCKS

Komatsu has placed a substantial contract with IAC Colpro for the supply and install of exhaust systems for 12 supersize Komatsu 830E AC trucks. Komatsu is a leading manufacturer of trucks and equipment for the global mining industry.

Each truck set of exhaust systems includes 2 250NB primary absorption style silencers and 1 secondary reactive silencer with dual 250NB inlets and outlets.

The primary silencers are fitted below the cabin deck above and behind the front wheels (seen in high temperature black paint in the adjacent photographs). One primary silencer is connected to each engine bank. The secondary silencer is fitted between the chassis rails and between the torque tubes. It is fitted above the rear trailing axle box and below the body. The exhaust outlets are from the rear of the truck.

The silencers are being fitted ‘on location’ at the Moolarben coalmine in NSW. Still a greenfield mine, the trucks will be used to remove overburden to get access to rich underground coal seams.

Scott Moore is Product Manager for Silencers: “Exhaust treatment for the trucks was a requirement for the mine to commence operations. If they want to grow operations at Moorlarben any time, there may be opportunity to quote for more work. Acoustic treatment of the exhaust is particularly important to reduce low frequency noise from the truck’s sound power spectrum.” With 8 trucks complete, all 12 will be working on the site by March.

GAS TURBINE SILENCER FOR OK TEDI COPPER MINE IN PAPAU NEW GUINEA

IAC Colpro has designed and supplied a high performance exhaust silencer for an Ok Tedi mining application in Papua New Guinea. It is one of the largest single component silencers ever manufactured by IAC Colpro.

The design phase of the project was carried out in conjunction with IAC Boet Stopson in France, in order to best suit the Solar Mars 100 gas turbine engine. With overall body dimensions Ø2,300mm x 8M long, and an outlet diameter of Ø1,600mm, it weighs a massive 7,000kg. The silencer will provide sufficient attenuation to meet 85 dBA at 1metre.

Paul Godbold, General Manager said: “We won this order through Solar Turbines Australia. We’ve built an excellent relationship with them having already supplied them with numerous high performance exhaust silencers and air inlet filtration systems. But a key challenge for us on the design for this particular silencer was to ensure its resistance to the torrential rain experienced in central Papua New Guinea for a lot of the year.”

CHAIRMAN VISITS LEADING ACOUSTIC CONSULTANTS ON IAC COLPRO

IAC Colpro Chairman Geoff Crowhurst undertook a 2-week Australian tour in October visiting leading Acoustic Consultants in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra. The trip was part of a wider programme of activities during his visit from the UK geared toward assisting IAC Colpro in winning a larger share of the noise control market.

Geoff has unrivalled knowledge of practical acoustical applications with over 35 years’ experience in the sector. Also European Director of Acoustics, Geoff made his latest trip ‘down under’ to assist in the local promotion of Acoustic Products and to deliver product familiarisation and training sessions to our local engineers in our Sydney office.

“There is a real appetite among the acoustic consultants I met for a greater understanding of architectural range in particular,” said Geoff. “Compared with what has been available locally to date, our acoustic doors, for example, are of far and away higher quality as well as offering superior acoustic performance. Our HVAC silencers, too, received a similar warm reception. They were interested to see their higher acoustical ratings and that we can offer a wider range than they’ve been able to access locally before.”

“There is huge enthusiasm for the wider range of IAC products among the IAC Colpro team, which is very encouraging. Their engineers are extremely able and it has been an altogether ‘bonza’ visit. I look forward to a reciprocal visit from Scott Moore to Europe early in the New Year.” Scott is IAC Colpro’s leading expert on catalytic converters and mining and industrial applications.

The next injection of UK know-how will come in the form of a visit in January of Shaun Moore, Product Manager Audiology. Shaun will be making a promotional tour in preparation for the launch of our range of Audiology Suites and booths at the Audiology Australia XIX Conference and Exhibition in Sydney in May.
