MILITARY HUSH
HOUSES REFURBISHED FOR KUWAIT AIR FORCE
Global
aero-engine testing specialist, IAC Aviation, has undertaken the full
refurbishment of two hush houses for the Kuwait Air Force (KAF) built
in 1993. The refurbishment was completed three months ahead of schedule.
The Hush Houses, one
based at Ahmed Al Jaber and the other at Ali Al Salem both accommodate
the F/A-18 fighter aircraft and the latter also accommodates the Hawk
Trainer. Both facilities are utilised for installed and uninstalled testing.
Phil Little, Project
Manager with IAC Aviation, co-ordinated the refurbishment projects for
the US government’s NAVAIR acting for the KAF. "Both test facilities
had served KAF well over the years but engine testing has really moved
on considerably since then and extensive upgrades were needed to bring
them up to today’s spec."
The refurbishment
was comprehensive throughout both facilities: overhaul and repair to the
thrust stands for uninstalled testing and the yoke assemblies (adaptor
frames), and the engine trolleys; control rooms refit; repair and upgrade
of the fuel distribution and management systems, and the augmentor and
compressed air systems.
IAC Aviation also
upgraded the buildings’ fabric: repairing and servicing the 7m x
15m aircraft entry acoustic doors, upgrading the lighting and interior
paint work; and both fire systems – water deluge and gas. The results?
Two 21st-century, world-class hush houses.
