The introduction of more comprehensive building regulations around the construction of schools buildings in recent years, BB93 and BB101, is good news for our kids. People say that kids don’t listen in school any more, but maybe it’s just because they can’t hear! These regulations have heralded a whole new era of school construction, with more schools better able to educate the next generation. The fact that what IAC has been doing in noise control for the past 40 plus years is now subject to building control and high priority is good news for British schools.

IAC works with acoustic consultants, architects, building designers and contractors UK-wide to deliver a range of acoustic solutions to education.

IAC is a BS EN ISO 9001 quality registered company All IAC products are acoustically-rated and certified.

Classvent

Classvent is a proven, noise-attenuated ventilation system compliant with BB101 regulations that provides natural ventilation, quietly.

Classvent is jointly-engineered by Air Handlers Limited in conjunction with IAC Limited – two top technology partners working together to provide a solution for Building Schools of the Future.

High levels of CO2 in any classroom impair children’s learning ability, so Natural Ventilation systems are an option. This is providing that they are designed to keep within the specified maximum classroom noise levels whilst keeping the CO2 levels below the stipulated 1,500ppm. Noisy inner city areas create particularly challenging environments for schools.

Classvent maintains comfortable ambient temperature and low levels of CO2 with variable control of both air volume and heating.

HOW IT WORKS

Classvent takes heat recovered from the exhaust air and uses it to heat the fresh air intake, to reduce the LPHW heating load.

The system also responds quickly to occupancy changes. When the room is unoccupied, the system immediately reverts to energy-saving, temperature set back mode with full recirculation of air flow. When the room is occupied, the system provides uniform distribution of temperature and fresh air.

Classvent provides an energy efficient solution to providing a good environment for teaching and learning.

EQUIPMENT

Constructed using 50mm double-skinned acoustically insulated panels.

Complete with:

  • Filters
  • Fresh air/recirculation dampers
  • Plate heat exchanger
  • LPHW heating coil
  • Variable speed supply and extract fan
  • Water pipework
  • 3-port valve
  • Control panel
  • CO2 sensors
  • Damper actuators
  • Internal wiring

OPERATION

Heating
The unit starts up in full recirculation mode and with the valve to the heating coil fully open to preheat the classroom. On occupancy, the system reverts to 100% fresh and exhaust air with room temperature control via the 3-port valve.

CO2 control
The fan speed is controlled to regulate CO2 to below the stipulated 1,500ppm level. In low occupancy, when the concentration is below 900ppm the fan speed slows to save energy.

Free cooling of ambient air
Even in winter high occupancy gains can generate a need for cooling, so the unit will automatically control the room air temperature and lower the supply air, off-coil temperature. A supply-air temperature limit of 16 degrees C is set to prevent cold draughts.

Ventilation Boost Mode
When there is a demand for cooling and no cooling is available from the outside air, the supply fan shuts down and the extract run in Boost Mode to increase the air change rate within the room.

Boost Mode is activated on a predetermined, return air set-point temperature or a manual teacher-operated push button.

Night ambient air cooling
Heat stored in the fabric of the building during the daytime can be removed simply by operating the unit using the lower-temperature night air.

MOUNTING OPTIONS

  • Within the ceiling void (550mm ceiling depth required)
  • Floor-standing vertical unit
  • Through the wall vertical unit (reduced footprint)

BENEFITS

  • Low noise level due to integrated IAC inlet and outlet attenuators
  • Energy-saving heat recovery
  • BMS compatible
  • Quick response to timetable occupancy changes
  • Uniform air distribution
  • Increased ventilation rates in summer
  • Unoccupied, reduced-temperature set point
  • Recirculation air on start-up
  • Energy-saving, variable-speed fans
  • Energy-saving, fast start-up just prior to occupancy. No need for pre-heat time compensation.

Case History

CHORLTON HIGH SCHOOL, Greater Manchester

Following a complaint by teachers to Manchester City Council about over-heating and mugginess, Classvent was installed as a trial in one classroom.

Temperatures and CO2 levels were monitored and compared with those of an adjacent classroom in which the original natural ventilation system remained.

Classvent mechanical ventilation system was proven to hold CO2 levels below the stipulated 1,500ppm guideline levels. Data for the naturally-ventilated adjacent classroom were taken in August with the windows open. CO2 levels would rise even further in winter, with windows closed.

Following this trial, further schools in the area opted to install the system under the Manchester Building Schools for the Future initiative.
