Refurbishment of Aero-Engine Test Cells

Market sector: Military
Location: United Kingdom
The brief: Refurbish three modular Gem engine test cells.
Replace the manual instrumentation system for a new state-of-the-art system.
Reduce engine-testing times by at least 40%
The solution:

At the heart of the project was the replacement of the manual instrumentation system for a new state-of-the-art IAC Aquarius Data Acquisition System (ADAS). This system provides a low cost, full colour data process and display of over 200 engine parameters simultaneously. Clear, user-friendly displays on the operator’s screen appear in both analogue and digital formats. This Windows-driven product includes a low/high visual and audible alarm system with computer-controlled engine shutdown.

Each of the complete modular facilities was removed from the customer’s site and stripped down at IAC’s factory in Winchester. Every component was inspected and either fully refurbished or replaced to ensure future serviceability.

When fully commissioned, the test facility provided the customer with a reduced engine test time of 50%.

What they said:

As well as meeting the strict engine cross-calibration criteria stipulated by Rolls-Royce for both Gnome and RTM322 engines; aviation experts have praised the Defence Aviation Repair Agency (DARA) facility provided by IAC.

"I thought the test cell was the best facility of its kind I've yet seen in Europe." - Bill Burchell, European Editor (Commercial), Overhaul and Maintenance.

"I would like to thank the engineers at both IAC and DARA for their assistance and co-operation throughout the cross-calibration exercise and congratulate them on producing a fine ‘state-of-the-art' test bed.” - Bert Jenkins, Principal Project Engineer (Test), Rolls-Royce plc.
