British Airways buys 63 acoustic ‘HOSUs’ for Heathrow Terminal 5

British Airways has commissioned IAC Limited, a world leader in noise control products, to supply 63 acoustic workstation ‘head of stand units’ (HOSUs) at London Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

The acoustically-rated HOSUs will be positioned right at the boarding gates and will provide weatherproof and soundproofed working environments for ground staff. These modules will contain on-the-spot computerised workstations for BA staff who process information on passenger, cargo and baggage loading. This will greatly speed up the aircraft turnaround process.

Vince Byrne of IAC’s Industrial team said: "We had to meet a very tight acoustical spec as these modules are exposed to high noise levels from nearby aircraft on all 6 exterior surfaces. As a manufacturer it’s our ability to guarantee acoustic performance that continues to win business and this was of paramount importance in winning the bid from British Airways. We have dealt with the company over many years, with our Aviation department having supplied jet blast barriers."

The HOSUs will be manufactured in IAC’s Winchester factory where they will be fully fitted with workstations and noise attenuated aircon/heating systems, and even wireless communications. The HOSUs will be covered with smart grey Euroclad to match the existing building fabric and all will be half-hour fire-rated and meet all British Standards of integrity, stability and conductivity.

The HOSUs will be slid in at ground level under the telescopic passenger walkways, from where they will be able to be easily relocated by forklift truck, if required. With all BA passengers for internal, European and long haul flights to be handled exclusively through the new terminal from 2008, these HOSUs will give BA competitive edge in terms of service delivery.
