IAC Supply 16 Acoustic Doors to German TV & Radio Giant, ARD

The IAC architectural division has supplied 16 acoustic doors to ARD TV & Radio studios in central London. ARD are the largest public service broadcasting company in Germany with many different TV and radio channels. Set up in a similar fashion to the BBC in the UK, they are funded by licence fees.

From their new UK headquarters just off of Tottenham Court Road in central London, local news bulletins are filmed, recorded and edited using state-of-the-art facilities. Each of the rooms required a very high level of sound-proofing as they are all in close proximity to one another. IAC doors were chosen for both their acoustic integrity and aesthetics and are found at the entrances of all studios, voice-over booths and control rooms.

The new base for ARD was a complete refurbishment of a historic building, of which the studios were carried out by White Mark Ltd who specified the IAC acoustic doors. Due to the quick response of IAC, the doors took around 8 weeks from initial specification to completion of the installation, working closely with White Mark and other on-site contractors. Kane Watkinson, Product Manager for acoustic doors and windows at IAC said “The project ran very smoothly, and ARD were very pleased to able to use their new facilities much quicker due to the swift manufacture and installation of the doors.”

Due to the amount sound reduction required, a combination of IAC STC47 and STC54 doors were used depending on the function of individual rooms. Most of the 16 installed doors were fitted with acoustic DDA approved vision panels. Some areas required the need for fire proofing and in these circumstances were fitted with IAC's range of BS:476 fire rated acoustic doors, also fitted with vision panels. The voice-over booths required particularly high acoustic performance and were fitted with IAC STC57 doors for maximum sound reduction.

The finished headquarters have been very well designed, combining chic minimalist open spaces, complemented by high performance, state-of-the-art studios, control rooms and recording facilities. Katya Theile, Production Manager from ARD commented saying “we are very pleased with the final result at our new London base; it is a really pleasant environment to work and performs outstandingly.”
