IAC Silencer and catalyst technology makes car recycling plant both clean and quiet

IAC has supplied exhaust silencers fitted with clean catalyst technology to a car recycling plant at Hegarty Metals in Limerick, Ireland. The diesel engine driven car recycling plant breaks the cars down into their component parts so that they can be recycled.

A successful metals recycling company, car recycling is a major revenue stream for Hegarty Metals. Their mechanical car processing system is powered by a large diesel engine, which, exceeded the strict Local Authority emissions limits. In order to help the company meet these limits, IAC were approached by one of their existing customers to supply combined silencers with oxidation catalysts to meet the CO & HC emissions limits and the noise limits specified by the Local Authority.

After installation a further requirement was identified by the Local Authority for a significant reduction in NOx emissions, therefore a Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system was installed.

SCR works by injecting ammonia into the exhaust gases then, by using catalysts, these along with the NOx are converted into harmless nitrogen and water.

A key challenge for IAC was that the large diesel power unit used for driving the plant was a slow running engine whose load characteristics were constantly changing. This made it difficult to adequately regulate the ammonia injection. This was solved by developing a precise monitoring technique for the injection process and then delivering detailed operator training.

Whilst IAC supplied the equipment and Project Management, Hegarty Metals installed the system themselves. Final commissioning was carried out by the manufacturer of the SCR system.

Prior to the installation of the SCR System, NOx levels were typically running at 1,615mg/Nm³ (5% O2). While the IAC system was designed to reduce this to no more than 500mg/Nm³, the final figure actually achieved was a 75% reduction to an impressively low 360mg/Nm³.
