MORE MIDDLESEX
BABIES TO GET NEONATAL HEARING TESTS THANKS TO IAC
Industrial
Acoustics Company (IAC) of Winchester, UK is currently involved with the
design, manufacture and installation of a suite of three high-performance
Audiology Test Rooms both for new-born babies and the elderly at The Central
Middlesex Hospital in Park Royal, NW10. Following very fast detailing
which began on 3 March, installation will begin on 3 April and take just
4 weeks.
This upgrade of the Audiology facilities for the Trust will enable the
clinical team to respond to the increasing demand from the elderly for
the latest digital hearing aid technology and also comply with the Universal
Neonatal Hearing testing directive introduced by the government. The directive
states that all newborn babies must undergo a hearing test for early detection
of any hearing problems.
The new Audiology suite at Central Middlesex comprises three Audiology
Test Rooms - two of which are linked by an Observation Room - and a further
acoustically-treated room.
The three Audiology Test Rooms are constructed using ‘Moduline’,
an integrated system of laboratory and field-tested components: wall and
roof panels; structurally isolated ‘floating’ floors; acoustic
windows; and silenced ventilation systems. The sliding acoustic doors
to all three Test Rooms save space in the facility and corridor areas.
IAC installed an additional acoustic panel roof over two of the rooms
to provide further protection from noise generated by overhead air conditioning
and duct work systems.
"Since 1999 the hospital has been undergoing a full rebuild as part
of a PFI redevelopment. This new Audiology suite is being constructed
in the newish ACAD building and I know the clinical team is looking forward
to this move from older facilities to new. It’s all going very well
at the moment," says Gary Munn, Estates Manager at the Trust. On
site installation of the Suite is programmed to take just 25 days and
be completed by 28 April.
Dr Alyson Bumby, Consultant Audiological Physician, heads the Audiology
team of eight. "This new facility will replace our fairly tatty unit
presently based in a former operating theatre. It is badly needed as we
have growing numbers of patients: elderly people referred by GPs and ENT
clinics for hearing aid related services, and now with the Universal Neonatal
Hearing Screening directives, we need a facility able to accommodate more
families and their babies. All of us in the team are particularly looking
forward to having a smart and comfortable working environment. It will
make a huge difference on a day-to-day basis."
IAC is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of Audiology Test
Rooms, having supplied many thousands to hospitals and clinics around
the world.
