WORLD'S TOP
HEARING RESEARCH UNIVERSITY CHOOSES IAC
Our
Medical and Life Sciences Division has built one of the world's most sophisticated
Hearing Research Facilities for the University of London's Institute of
Laryngology in London.
Occupying most of the first floor of a purpose-built,
'quiet' 5-storey building, on the very busy Grays Inn Road, the facility
comprises a full Anechoic Chamber and a suite of five fully isolated Audiometric
Test Rooms whose specification was one of the most demanding ever undertaken
in IAC’s 56-year history.
All
of the six research rooms are triple-skinned with a Nr measuring down
to below -10dBA, much lower than the normal threshold of hearing. IAC
also designed and constructed a complete concrete floating floor to the
level above the suite, to ensure 100% sound isolation.
"The noise levels specified for in this facility
by Professor David Kemp Phd, are so low, that it is difficult for them
to be physically measured. Using our team of Acoustic Engineers we had
to work very closely with Professor Kemp and with the architects on the
design of the complete building right from the early drawing board stage.
Most of the levels had to be mathematically calculated using proven product
data and our own engineering experience” says Jason Saunders, Business
Manager. “We are still in discussion with Professor Kemp and his
team regarding ‘cable entry’ into these rooms and are confident
that, by working together, we will develop a new type of system with easy
access and complete noise isolation for this scheme and future projects
going forward.”
