IAC SIM Engineering helps Dunkirk community monitor industrial noise

IAC Sim Engineering & Soft SAS (France) has developed a noise monitoring solution for residents in an industrial area near Dunkirk in Pas de Calais, northern France.

Since 2006 environmental protection agencies and the residents of the towns of Fort-Mardyck and Petite-Synthe near Dunkirk have been complaining of on-going noise nuisance from neighbouring industrial estates.

They jointly presented their complaints to their regional SPPI of Côte d'Opale-Flandre (Secrétariat Permanent pour la Prévention des Pollutions Industrielles). One of 15 in France, the SPPI is a voluntary body bringing together the joint interests of environmental protection agencies, local collectives, local government, manufacturers, experts, the media etc. It promotes good governance in managing such interests to benefit the lifestyle and health of local people.

The SPPI commissioned IAC SIM Engineering to design and install a network of noise monitoring and measuring equipment around the area, in order to record noise levels round the clock, 24 :7.

IAC SIM Engineering installed a system composed of seven ‘Monitoring IAC SIM’ sound stations. Each station comprises a microphone linked to weather monitoring software. Together they provide accurate real time calculations, store the data and communicate it back to a centre where the data is uploaded to a dedicated web page at www.dkbel.fr. Each sound monitoring station is enclosed in thermic- and weather-proof casing and is equipped with an emergency electricity supply.

This noise monitoring network allows local people control over measuring noise levels and to identify peak times. By consulting the relative web pages, local factories are then able to adjust their working patterns accordingly.

IAC SIM Engineering is a specialist provider of noise monitoring solutions to industry, local goverment and aviation throughout Europe. www.sim-engineering.com
