December 2007
Welcome to this issue of e-bulletin

Welcome to this final e-newsletter for 2007 and an insight into the huge range of projects underway at home and overseas. We’re working more and more in education as the school building programme continues apace and our doors business is seeing its best year yet.

With Christmas fast approaching I do hope you get to enjoy some celebrations with your colleagues in the workplace. Here at IAC we will have our annual Christmas party this week to celebrate and ‘let our hair down’ after all the hard work of the year. We could not have done it without you, our valued customers – for which we thank you. I along with all of us here at IAC wish you a very Happy Christmas and we look forward to working with you to make it, indeed, a mutually prosperous New Year in 2008.

Best regards.

Brian Quarendon
Group President and CEO

STYLISH ACOUSTIC LOUVRE SCREEN FOR REISS FASHION HOUSE

IAC has met a demanding architectural brief in the supply of two large, acoustic louvre screens for the London HQ of Reiss fashion house.

A leading designer and retailer of men’s and women’s prêt a porter, Reiss has 30 outlets in London and others around the world, including the USA, Europe and the Middle East.

The bespoke acoustic louvre screens at their flagship location form part of a refurbishment programme for the entire building, including the air conditioning system. Architects Squire and Partners required that the larger rooftop louvre screen was inclined at 15 degrees and incorporated mitred corner blade sections to match the adjacent mansard roofing. The louvre blades were also inverted to prevent ‘line of sight’ through the screen from nearby offices and residences.

The screens measure 23m x 5m and 7m x 9m and are staggered over two roof levels. Gary Dawson, IAC Business Manager, said: “Our design successfully interpreted the brief, to provide effective acoustic treatment but also architecturally sympathetic screening of the plant rooms. Crucially we maintained good air flow around the plant in the process.”

EUROPEAN COURT OF JUSTICE FITS 120 IAC ACOUSTIC DOORS

It’s going to be a comfortable, quiet environment for justice to be delivered at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg thanks to 120 acoustic doors from IAC.

This sizeable contract has been won by IAC Boet Stopson in France to supply 120 STC53 doors (96 single-leaf and 14 double-leaf). The noise performance of the doors range is from 42 to 51 dBA with both smoke and fire ratings. They are to be placed throughout the building. Manufacturing is underway at present, with staggered delivery up until March next year.

Vincent Masse is the Managing Director at IAC Boet Stopson in Lille in northern France. “This is one of the largest door orders IAC Boet Stopson has ever received, and testament to our effectiveness in introducing the IAC product range into Europe since we joined the IAC Group 5 years ago.”

IAC FURTHERING INROADS INTO UK EDUCATION

Five educational establishments have invested in IAC’s acoustic doors and windows this autumn in a bid to create quieter learning environments.

Comber and Bangor High Schools in Northern Ireland have ordered a total of 37 acoustic doors between them, while Bristol Cathedral School is integrating 3 IAC doors and an acoustic window into their new four-storey music building now under construction. The £3m building has been designed by Narracott Oxford Mills Architects. Their Mark Holloway has extensive experience in design for Education: “When it came to specifying the doors and window for the recording studio and composing suite, Midas, the contractors, and myself both came up with IAC as our preferred supplier. Their reputation goes before them, and the doors’ good acoustic performance meant we were easily able to achieve the acoustic requirements for both spaces.”

Two additional customers include Latimer School in Hammersmith in London soon to receive an Acoustic Door and two windows, and the Open University in Milton Keynes. An IAC acoustic window is destined for the OU’s new Jennie Lee Building on the main campus. Much acclaimed architecturally, the building is set to achieve high level sustainability targets and will house cutting edge maths and computing research on the campus.

Scott Simmons – Door and Windows Product Manager said: ”Over the years we have been a key supplier to schools of music practise rooms but now more and more are appreciating the role that acoustic doors can play in other parts of a campus to create a quieter learning environment. With the ‘Building Better Schools’ programme progressing well UK-wide, we are seeing increasing business in this sector.”

USA GOVERNMENT VISITORS CENTER IN WASHINGTON GETS THE IAC DOORS TREATMENT

IAC America recently installed over forty (40) Noise-Lock® doors in The House and The Senate expansion facilities in an area that is completely below ground.

The IAC Noise-Lock® Doors were specially engineered to accommodate a highly decorative and sophisticated wood cladding. The cladding was fixed to the doors on location so that it would not interfere with the doors’ operation. These doors also had special finishes on all of the factory-installed builders’ hardware. All this created a need for special attention to handling and installation to preserve the integrity of the finished product.

In addition, IAC America provided and installed its new Trackwall® NIC Series 854, acoustically rated STC 64, NIC 60 and NNIC 64. The panels of this acoustic partition wall are 8” thick and are located in a lower level adjacent to the production studios.

The construction project was a huge undertaking that started with the ground breaking in August of 2002 followed by a year for the excavations. Construction of the Center began in 2003. Inclusion of the IAC products took place over a two-year period working closely with the global design practice RTKL of Washington DC who also designed the building envelope. The interior general contractor was Grunley Construction. The Center is scheduled to be finished early 2008.

Many thanks to IAC America’s Access Systems team and to technical representative, Richard von Lange of TechStar Industries, for his efforts in completing this project.

IAC REDUCES FACTORY NOISE FOR LEADING SCANDINAVIAN MANUFACTURER

Logstor, a leading European manufacturer of pre-insulated pipes, has improved the working environment for its factory operatives through a noise reduction solution from IAC Nordic.

Logstor’s pipes are used worldwide in heating and cooling systems. Their principal markets include oil and gas energy markets and marine industries where the pipes transport oil, gas and chemicals.

Committed to a stringent corporate environmental policy, Logstor committed this year to create a safer and more pleasant working environment on their shop floor. Their overall aim was to reduce general noise levels as well as reduce the noise locally at a number of specific workstations.

IAC Nordic designed and installed a range of noise reduction solutions. These included fixed interior absorbent barriers; sound absorptive wall panels; moveable noise barriers; automatic-opening enclosures and fixed enclosures. Helle Thomsen, Jutland Sales Manager said: “We have obtained general noise reduction in the order of between 8-10 dB in many working areas around the factory. Quite a number of workers no longer need to wear hearing protection.”

“We were very pleased with IAC Nordic’s input throughout. They attended our early meetings with our Health & Safety consultant and so were able to develop a noise control solution wholly in line with Danish legislation,” said Torben Fruehoej, Logstor’s Health and Safety Manager.

IAC Nordic is now preparing to deliver similar solutions at other Logstor factories in neighbouring countries.

LEADING SWEDISH HOSPITAL CHOOSES AUDIOMETRIC FACILITY FROM IAC NORDIC

IAC Nordic has completed a milestone order for an Audiometric Booth from a major regional hospital in Jönköping, in central Sweden.

From their base in Denmark IAC Nordic’s markets extend throughout Scandinavia and the Low Countries, with Audiometric products being a key focus of their business. The order for an Audiometric Booth type 403 is considered to be highly significant for a number of reasons: the reputation and standing of the hospital, and also the fact that the hospital’s technical department services a major part of the audiological equipment in use throughout the region. The calibration of all the audiometric equipment will now take place within this world-standard acoustical test facility from IAC.

Anders Olsen is IAC Nordic’s Business Manager: “To function well, this calibration equipment requires the testing environment to exhibit not only well-defined acoustics but also a very low level of ambient noise. Our booths all have guaranteed acoustic performance and are trusted by audiology clinicians and researchers the world over.”

Following installation last month the 403-A booth’s acoustical performance was measured by IAC Nordic prior to being handed over to the calibration team.

THE DOOR TO SUCCESS AT SHEPPERTON STUDIOS

Shepperton Studios, favourite of British filmmakers for decades, is to benefit from 4 sets of giant stage doors from IAC.

IAC is a key supplier to theatres and studios around the country, one of only a few manufacturers with sufficient shop floor capability to make giant acoustic doors for such environments.

Both sets of giant z-frame steel acoustic doors for Shepperton Studios will measure 1500mm wide x 2300mm high and yet will still be manoeuvrable by one person. As well as makers of British films for cinema, the studios are also used by filmmakers for advertising for Tescos, such as their latest ad featuring the Spice Girls dodging each other round the aisles when Christmas shopping.

The Theatres Gallery on the IAC website, features many of IAC’s theatre customers including the National Theatre and the Unicorn Theatre for Children. The largest stage doors ever made at the Winchester factory were Z frame acoustic steel doors measuring 6 metres high for the auditorium of the University of Hertfordshire.
