Welcome to our latest e-bulletin
In the current economic climate we are all doing some navel gazing to see where we can trim back and that’s a good thing, providing quality is not compromised. With diversified markets and a truly global manufacturing base now, we are perhaps better positioned than our rivals to weather the storm – and we hope that this will have knock on benefits for your business, too, as we continue to commit to offering you best value.
Best regards.

IAC COLPRO WINS LARGE STANDBY GENERATOR CONTRACT IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
IAC Colpro, IAC’s Australian company, was recently awarded the contract to engineer, supply, install and commission a new standby power generating system at a 24-storey commercial building in north Sydney.
The building, 168 Walker Street, is in a quiet street amongst other commercial buildings and private homes.
The project involved installation of a 800 kVA generator to supply the building’s essential services (including fire services) and General House Services, and a 1250 kVA emergency generator. The latter will supply standby power to the block’s main tenant, First Data, to enable their business critical operations to continue should mains power be interrupted.
Both emergency generators had to be installed on the roof of the building, within separate acoustic and weatherproof enclosures. For this, steelwork was required to support both generators and spread the footprint loading on the roof area.
IAC Colpro fabricated the steelwork and had it all hot-dipped galvanised, including access walkways with hand railing and steps.
The steelwork then had to be installed on the roof a week prior to the positioning of the generator canopies. So craneage of the steelwork and generators was undertaken in two separate lifts.
“The width of the street, the overhanging trees and the actual positioning of the steelwork on the roof meant we had to bring in a special heavy lift crane,” said Dave Pearce, Senior Project Engineer.
Following the installation of the steelwork over the course of a week, and sign off by the structural engineers, the generators and their respective acoustic weatherproof canopies arrived on site ready for the second lift. Dave Pearce concludes, “By the end of the day it was gratifying to see both generators sitting atop the support steelwork on their anti–vibration matting. A good day’s work!”

IAC NORDIC EXCELS AT THE NEW DANISH RADIO CONCERT HALL
IAC Nordic has excelled in the provision of acoustic control studios and acoustic surfaces at the prestigious New Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen.
A Gala Concert was held to mark the formal opening of the building by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark – and the occasion attracted a fanfare of publicity. IAC’s acoustic wall panels featured as a backdrop to many of the photographs and film footage of the Queen that appeared in the nation’s media following the event. Designed by French Architect Jean Novéll, the impressive new-build Concert Hall houses world-class recording and performance spaces, all enhanced by IAC acoustic technology.
IAC Nordic successfully delivered and installed all acoustic surfaces in Studios 2, 3 and 4. In addition they installed all 4 control rooms including that for the massive main Concert Hall – the so-called ‘Studio 1’. During the Gala Concert a number of leading Danish musicians gave concerts in all 4 studios which were broadcast live.
“It was a marvellous occasion,” said Lars Birch Nielsen, Managing Director. “We have been working on the project for 3 years, and it was very satisfying to see and hear the excellent fruits of our labour. Having the Queen admire the acoustic work we have undertaken was a real accolade for IAC.”

IAC CHINA NOW AT FULL CAPACITY
IAC China is now trading to full capacity offering top quality products to customers throughout the Far East and South East Asia.
Our Sales and Engineering office in Shenzhen serves our manufacturing facility in Dongguan which is very close to the major ports of Shenzhen, Guang Zhou and Hong Kong. These are our doorways for exporting goods to customers throughout the Far East.
Our current factory is capable of the wide range of processes including light gauge and medium gauge fabrication/welding using MIG/JIG and MMA processes; coded welding capabilities; painting, blasting and welding; button punching; guillotining and bending and lock forming.
General Manager, Mr Fred Zhang – who speaks fluent English - says: “By June of this year we will have two manufacturing operations here: our current factory and a new factory dedicated to heavy fabrication. This will be 4,500m2 with cranes capable of lifting 20 tonnes and with an ‘under hook’ height of 12 metres. The new factory will also have a facility to load directly into containers for export. We shall be purchasing a CNC Plasma Cutter as soon as the new factory is established.”
A visit to the new bi-lingual IAC China webpages www.industrialacoustics.com/china shows that IAC products currently being manufactured in China include: Metadyne wedges for our anechoic chambers; Q-Ducts/Conics/Louvres and Splitters for HVAC and industrial applications; structural steelwork; Acoustic Doors; Acoustic Enclosures; Moduline panels for media studios and audiology rooms; glued panel systems, and Diesel Engine Silencers. The product range is likely to grow as dedicated production ‘cells’ are formed to transpose the production processes.
Brian Quarendon, Group President, said: “Being able to deliver the same high quality IAC products and systems through our China facilities is hugely important for our global reputation. The fact that raw materials in China tend to be to China National Standards, with similar physical and chemical characteristics to those in the West, means we can uphold our quality standards.”
With excellent shipping times to Europe (30 days), USA West Coast (15 days), USA East Coast (30 days), these new manufacturing facilities certainly make the world a smaller place for IAC.

The Minister for Defence of the Government of Brazil has headed a high level visit to the GEM facility upgraded by IAC Aviation, to see an engine under test and to understand the full benefits of the system to the armed forces.
The facility, based in São Paulo, will be used for testing the Brazilian Navy’s Rolls-Royce GEM engines.
The Minister, Nelson Jobin, was accompanied by other high ranking officers from the forces. The group was particularly impressed by the ease of operation and simple user interface of IAC’s latest LabVIEW based Data Acquisition System and facility control system, a key part of the upgrade, which will substantially improve the operational efficiency by reducing the engine testing and data processing time. It offers Rolls-Royce Brazil enormous benefits in supportability, being based upon commercially available hardware and software.
IAC Aviation – a world leader in aero-engine testing - is the UK Ministry of Defence’s approved Design Authority (DA) for Rolls-Royce GEM engine test facilities.
Graham Lavis, our Aviation Solutions Project Manager, said: “We have extensive experience of delivering such key projects all around the world – but to have such a high ranking visit to São Paulo was an honour and fitting conclusion to a first class, on-time, on budget project.”

EUROPEAN HQ’S NEW SIGN HAS THE ‘WOW!’ FACTOR
Visitors to IAC’s European Headquarters in Moorside Road in Winchester will spot the new corporate sign from quite some distance away.
Occupying a prominent position outside IAC House, the new sign certainly has the ‘wow!’ factor.
Richard Willoughby, Planner/Programmer, was given the task of designing and constructing the new sign, whose pyramidal structure is crowned with the distinctive IAC logo. “I wanted to design something impactful and durable that would really make a statement. Using the factory’s laser cutter meant I was able to devise a programme to cut the IAC logo in mild steel. Once powder coated in the IAC blue I built the plinth to show it off. It’s true, you can’t miss it!”
“We were all delighted when we first saw it installed,” commented Geoff Crowhurst, Director Acoustic Division. “We had given Richard a completely free hand in the design and were not disappointed!”
