IAC – CATALYST FOR NEW INDUSTRY AWARD FOR YOUNG ACOUSTICAL ENGINEERS IAC is delighted to announce our corporate sponsorship of a new Award being introduced, at our behest, by the Institute of Acoustics for acousticians early in their careers. The biennial award – The ‘Young Person’s Award for Innovation in Acoustical Engineering’ will be awarded for the first time in November 2005. Commenting on the new Award, Dr Tony J Jones FIOA, and President of the Institute said: "We are delighted to announce the launch of this biennial Award. For many years the contribution to industry of the inventiveness and skills of acoustical engineers has been undervalued. We are keen to see their contributions recognised and celebrated and to promote the area of industrial acoustics across a wide spectrum of engineering applications." Entries are welcomed from now until the closing date of 15 July 2005 when the distinguished panel of judges drawn from academia and industry will select a winner and two runners up. The judging panel will comprise: Dr Andrew Moorhouse, Reader, University of Salford; Colin English, Partner, English Cogger Partnership and President Elect, Institute of Acoustics; Roger Menaldino Principal Research Engineer, Acoustics, with BAE Systems Underwater Systems Division; and our own Geoff Crowhurst, Director, IAC UK Acoustic Division. Projects likely to reach the shortlist will be: innovative and inventive; feasible and practicable; money-saving; green; end-user friendly; time-saving and/or that are improvements to existing processes. Dr Tony Jones, again: "In an increasingly noisy world the prospects for those embarking on a career in acoustics are looking better than ever – this award is aimed at those making their mark early on in their careers. The high standards being achieved by acoustics graduates in recent years promises a high calibre of entries and I envy the judging panel their job of recognising and rewarding excellence." The Award winner will receive a prestigious trophy, a luxury weekend for two in Copenhagen plus £500 to spend, and an acoustic tour of Denmark’s new world acclaimed national Opera House, courtesy of Arup Acoustics. The first runner up will receive a cheque for £200 and a Commendation Goblet and the second runner up a Commendation Goblet. Brian Quarendon, Chief Executive Officer and President, IAC said: "It is great that the achievements of acousticians in industry will be recognised and applauded in this Award! We are delighted to be supporting the Institute in this and flying the flag for this sector of engineering." For more details

DANISH RADIO CHOOSES IAC FOR STATE-OF-THE-ART ACOUSTICS IAC Nordic has won a major order worth $1.3M from Danish Radio in Copenhagen. IAC will design, manufacture and install variable acoustics in three large studios at Danish Radio’s new headquarters. The contract includes
the design and construction of variable acoustic absorbers and reflectors
in three studios, all connected to a new Concert Hall. The ‘studios’
are going to be large, as their names suggest: Orchestra Hall; Rhythmical
Studio and Choir Hall. The acoustic and architectural requirements for
this project are particularly demanding. The acoustic performance of
the three studios will be able to be changed by rotating, sliding and
opening/closing devices fitted with reflective and absorbent surfaces. For more information

JET BLAST BARRIER FOR NEW TERMINAL AT MADRID’S BARAJAS AIRPORT
IAC Aviation's subsidiary in Spain has designed, manufactured and installed a Jet Engine Blast Barrier for the aircraft service area of the new terminal being built at Madrid's Barajas Airport. The airport handles more than 25 million passengers a year, a figure set to almost double by 2010. IAC Aviation is a world leader in noise control and engine testing for civil and military aircraft fleets and guarantees performance of all our products. This Blast Barrier, constructed of 3mm galvanised steel sheet, is in two sections totalling around 150 metres in length with an overall height of four metres. The blast deflector, inclined at 30º to the vertical, consists of a steel deflector mesh, 3mm thick, on 15mm thick base plates. The barrier will operate effectively in wind speeds of up to 130 km/h with special grilles diverting the jet blast and spreading it upward at an angle of between 60º and 80º - air flow ensures the blast is both cooled and decelerated. Painted in standard aeronautical colours of red and white, with lighting and LEDs, the barriers comply fully with requirements of the International Civil Aviation Agreement. Julio Rubio, Managing Director of IAC Boet Stopson in Barcelona, said: "Legislation is mounting Europe-wide, concerning noise and safety control in airport environments whether for service personnel working in aircraft maintenance, or local communities affected by increasing air traffic. This is a growing market and one in which IAC is now a key player internationally." Further information

BUILDS 27 DIGITAL STUDIOS FOR BBC In one of our biggest studio projects ever, we designed and installed 27 world class digital studios for the BBC’s new broadcasting centre at The Mailbox in central Birmingham. The facility replaces 30-year old Pebble Mill. The glitzy Mailbox building also houses hotels, shops, restaurants and apartments and it was the low weight-loading capacity of the building that brought the architects, BDP, to us for the studios. Our lightweight, performance-guaranteed, ‘Moduline’ product was the answer. Moduline is self-supporting system of 100mm thick acoustic panels which formed the walls, floors and ceilings. Into these high performance Noise-Lock doors and windows were fitted along with internal tuner panels and stylish attractive acoustic plaques. The 27 studios range
from Control/Editing Rooms, Voiceover Booths, Radio Studios and Post-Production
Suites through to a full-scale, state-of-the-art TV Studio. For more information

BOET STOPSON SILENCERS’ ‘ONE-WEEK’ PLEDGE IAC’s Boet Stopson range of Standard Engine Exhaust Silencers is now available in just one week from order in the UK. Response to the range has been very positive since we introduced it last year. Malcolm Hewitt, Manager, Industrial Silencers said: "The range has been greeted enthusiastically in particular because it can often achieve specification with a single, high-performance unit in applications where two traditional, UK-manufactured silencers would be needed. "We’re focused on performance. We’ve removed the 'cross your fingers and hope' element, prevalent amongst many established UK manufacturers, and have developed a range of products that have been tested and whose performance is known. IAC SET TO TAKE UK NOISE BARRIERS MARKET BY STORM IAC has been accepted as a member of the UK’s Fencing Contractors’ Association so giving us open access to the wider UK noise barrier market. There is increasing demand for effective, strong and lasting noise barriers along our motorways, railway routes and airport perimeters. This, along with increasing noise legislation, is leading to the rapid demise of the traditional wooden barrier in favour of steel alternatives. This augurs well for IAC’s state-of-the-art acoustic steel barrier technology, offering "Certified" acoustic performance. Members of the Fencing Contractors Association (FCA) have to date mainly specified wooden fencing. The recent merger of the Environmental Noise Barriers Association (ENBA), which represents noise barrier installers, manufacturers and suppliers, with the FCA, makes IAC’s entry on the scene particularly timely. Further good news is the fact that the British Standards Institution is currently working on new methods of assessing barriers’ performance. This is a plus for IAC, as our acoustic performance criteria are already the highest in the industry giving us a head start over the competition. Richard Lissenborough, Project Manager, IAC Industrial, says: "We’ve long wanted to be a FCA member, but could never get a look in because our barriers are steel, and not wood. So this is a watershed moment for us. For the first time IAC now has huge potential for bidding barrier projects with contractors formerly using wooden alternatives. With the endorsement of the FCA, we’re set to land considerable market share and in a short time-frame. Our steel barriers’ proven acoustic performance, long life and demountability will, I’m sure, prove irresistible." Wendy Baker is Chief Executive of the FCA: "We are pleased to have IAC as a member company of the FCA. Their commitment to improving quality and standards in the manufacture of noise barriers has enabled us also to approve their membership of the Environmental Noise Barrier Association."
