WELCOME TO OUR LATEST E-BULLETIN

With reflection the industry marks the passing of Martin Hirschorn, the pioneering founder of IAC, who died in June. Passionate about noise control, his list of ‘firsts’ in noise abatement technology were the foundation on which IAC has built its subsequent success around the globe. A fitting tribute, then, that we continue to win substantial contracts from the world’s best-known brands for the proven excellence of our products.

Thank you for your continued support as we strive to provide best quality, best performance and best value for money in the sector.

Enjoy the stories.

Kind regards.

IAC FOUNDER DIES AGED 89

The July issue of top American magazine ‘Sound & Vibration’ carried a moving tribute to Martin Hirschorn (b.1921 d. 2010) eminent founder of IAC who died in New York on June 1st aged 89.

The son of impoverished Jewish parents in 1930s Berlin, Hirschorn left Germany for England where he worked to pay his own way through technical education. From here he relocated to the USA where he went on to start IAC from an office in his aunt’s small apartment. Today IAC is a global leader in noise control, with a turnover of over $130million.

Read Martin Hirschorn’s fascinating story in the editorial by Jack K Mowry at www.sandv.com/home.htm alongside the article “Making the World a Quieter Place: The IAC Story”.

The USA’s ‘Hearing Journal’ and the ‘New York Times’ also carried his obituary.

IAC AMERICA TO BUILD LARGE TURNKEY TEST FACILITY FOR CUMMINS IN USA

IAC America has recently been awarded a contract for Cummins in the USA, for the design, delivery and installation of a substantial state-of-the-art Acoustic Test Facility - and on 17 August the team ‘broke ground’.

Dubbed “Project Sonitus” (the Latin word ‘sonitus’ means noise or sound) this Hemi-Anechoic Test Facility is for Cummins Power Generation in Fridley, Minnesota.

The 1 million cubic foot facility includes: a large Hemi-Anechoic Chamber; a Reverberation Room; a Test Cell; a Prep Area; a Control Room; a Conference Centre and a Mechanical Equipment Room. The facility is designed to meet the testing requirements for the current range of machines at Cummins and includes capabilities for the development and test of the next generation of machines. The design is environmentally friendly and meets all community noise control standards. The facility is scheduled for completion in early Q3 2011.

This is an exciting opportunity in particular because IAC is the ‘design-builder’. Together, IAC and Cummins are two global leaders working together to make the world a quieter place!

Cummins Inc., a global power leader, is a corporation of complementary business units that design, manufacture, distribute and service engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems. Headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, Cummins serves customers in approximately 190 countries and territories through a network of more than 500 company-owned and independent distributor locations and approximately 5,200 dealer locations.

IAC AVIATION INVITED ONTO WORLD STANDARDS BODY

Fraser Alexander, Chief Engineer with IAC Aviation has been invited to join the world’s leading standards-setting group within the Aviation Test Cells arena.

SAE International Aerospace – a global body that shares best practice and set standards for the sector – is a recognised world authority.

SAE holds 2 meetings a year, attended by less than 30 voting members and guest attendees drawn from among the world’s top manufacturers, suppliers and research institutions. Through his participation, Fraser takes the IAC Aviation heritage, technical excellence and market standing right to where it belongs - into the heart of the aero-engine testing arena. Fraser is to be the only regular representative and member from aero-engine test facility manufacturing companies in the UK.

For his first active participation, Fraser attended the meeting in Salem, Boston, USA in May for both the EG-1E Sub-Committee meeting, and the Turbine Engine Testing Working Group (TETWoG) meeting. The latter 2-day event included a tour of GE’s jet engine manufacturing plant at neighbouring Lynn in Massachusetts. At these SAE meetings, professionals meet to share knowledge, understanding and advice; so-called ‘advisory notices’ are posted, and sector-wide ‘recommendations’ made. These are then presented in papers which can be purchased freely by professionals worldwide.

The next combined meeting is scheduled for November of this year in Dallas, Texas. It will be focusing on Turboshaft and Turboprop engines with tours, including one of American Airlines maintenance facilities.

David Swartfigure, General Manager, IAC Aviation said: “Fraser’s membership of this gathering of the sector’s elite professionals illustrates the recognition and respect IAC enjoys among its peers globally. We look forward to making a significant contribution to the knowledge base, and to the kudos such involvement will bring.”

SWEDEN’S LEADING HEARING AID DISPENSER HÖRSAM CHOOSES IAC

Hörsam, Sweden’s leading hearing aid dispenser has selected IAC’s 250 Series Mini Sound Shelter for its high street hearing centres.

Last year Hörsam embarked on a nationwide refurbishment programme to upgrade their hearing centres with high quality audiometric booths from IAC. The booths will allow the audiologists to perform consistent and accurate audiometric testing on their clients, providing quiet and comfortable environments for the testing procedures.

Hörsam has offices and shops throughout major parts of Sweden. They are also a resident private hearing aid dispenser in many major hospitals. Hörsam’s roots go back to 1946 – when it was a cooperative jointly owned by county councils and the Swedish government’s Hearing Department. Besides a wide range of hearing aids, Hörsam offers a comprehensive range of additional devices for aiding the hard of hearing, and sells consumables online.

According to their leading audiologist, Roger Olsson, Hörsam selected IAC’s 250 Series mini Sound Shelter for their centres, for its quality and practicality. Several are already in use in Hörsam’s hearing centres with more coming on stream.

IAC ACOUSTIC DOORS FOR NEW £35M GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE HQ

IAC is undertaking a substantial contract for Acoustic Doors for the new 11,600 m² Greater Manchester Police new Divisional Headquarters under construction at the new business park, ‘Central Park’.

The doors contract was awarded to IAC by construction giant Carillion who are delivering the project for Great Manchester Police - the third largest police force in England and Wales. The building has been designed by Aedas Architects - one of the world’s largest and leading architectural design practices with 38 offices in the world.

The contract comprises 58 Acoustic Doors in mixed performances of STC-51, -53 and -61 for cells, service risers, interview rooms and consultation areas. IAC ACOUSTIC ENCLOSURE FOR OIL WELL IN HAMPSHIRE, UK

IAC has designed, manufactured and installed a turnkey Generator House at the Singleton Oilfield in West Sussex to protect the local community from noise nuisance.

Situated in a clearing in woodland, the generating station powers the pumping operations at the oilfield which currently extracts a respectable 800 approx. barrels of crude oil per day from seven production wells. The field is operated by Irish exploration company Providence Resources. The oilfield has had a successful last 12 months and production is set to grow by some 40 percent in the year ahead.

In a ‘gas to wire’ project the burn-off gas is being used to power the generator which supplies the site with electricity. Excess electricity is being sold back to the national grid.

In this turnkey Acoustic Enclosure project IAC also handled all civils, including the concrete foundations, and installed a maintenance access door for personnel. For further protection of site workers a sound insulated generator control room was installed.

SECOND PHASE BARRIER WALL FOR DATA CENTRE AT REDHILL

IAC is providing a second phase to a barrier wall for a major Data Centre in Redhill, Surrey that the company erected in 2009. This time round IAC is also providing all the steel columns for the barrier construction.

The barrier wall noise control solution will protect the Centre’s neighbouring community from noise from chillers and containerised generators.

The chillers are on a raised open gird mezzanine, with the generators - supplied in containers - lined up alongside them. Whilst this keeps the height of the plant area to a minimum, it does require a larger footprint.

The 8m-high louvre screen was installed on both sides back in 2009, and IAC is now building up to the existing louvres all along one side – to a length of approximately 100m long plus an additional 22m section returning to the main building.

Nine louvred sections within the wall, each 3.75m wide x 4.35m high will line up with the intake silencers on the back up generators, and the 5 1.0m x 0.75m acoustic hatches will enable access to the fuel filler cabinet. Two double-leaf acoustic doors are also part of the supply, both providing a clear opening of 2.59m wide x 3.16m high.

Vince Fox is Senior Project Engineer with IAC. “We are the preferred provider of barrier walls of several of the UK’s leading Data storage companies. We have a good track record of providing turnkey packages, and delivering barriers with a clean, cladding panel type appearance thanks to being face/hidden fixed.”

This project at Redhill is such a turnkey package in that IAC is providing the steel columns, bracing and below ground stub columns, albeit with the below ground works and fitting of stub columns being delivered by other providers. In addition to the supply and installation of the acoustic panels and louvers, IAC is also supplying and erecting around 25 tonnes of steel structure.

The project is due for completion shortly.
