BMW North America HQ gets IAC Roof-Top Barrier
Bronx, NY (August 4) --BMW’s North America Corporate Headquarters is to receive an IAC Roof-Top Barrier system to protect the local community against noise from air conditioning units.
When BMW announced the expansion of their North American Headquarters, renowned Architects HOK were tasked with creating a home for the North American Research and Engineering Center and Technical Services Group. This would include state-of-the-art technology with a careful eye on ensuring the facility would be environmentally and aesthetically compatible with bucolic Woodcliff Lake, NJ.
A key criterion was acoustical compatibility with the community – rural in nature yet surrounded by many lovely homesteads. The design team also recognized that the Research and Development facility would require support from many large and noisy pieces of equipment – almost all to be located on the building roofs.
HOK opted for the exceptional sound absorption and sound transmission loss capabilities of the IAC Noishield Barrier product. Construction details that included a non-welded assembly with a full 5” thick layer of sound absorption material, a powder coat finish, and horizontal reveals providing full length panel drainage on 24” vertical centers, would ensure the system be maintenance-free for well over 20 years.
Another feature – the IAC system was already designed to withstand wind loads specified in the International Building Code with a post spacing of 16’ – which also matched the vertical lines of the buildings facades.
However, HOK wanted to take the project to a higher aesthetic level and challenged IAC to improve the existing system. Specifically we had to find a way to fully conceal the flanges of the structural support system – in essence, to create the visual of a continuous, post-free wall nearly 300 ft long that closely aligned with all other vertical elements of the building façade.
Task in hand - Bob Schmitt of QuietStar Industries, the IAC Technical Sales Representative for the greater New York area, immediately enlisted the expertise of IAC R&D, Engineering, and Manufacturing to develop the concepts and details that would satisfy HOK’s objectives.
Designs were vetted – prototypes built – and the team concluded that the Noishield Barrier product line could indeed satisfy all of HOK’s objectives.
As a result of this up-front effort IAC was well prepared to offer the project General Contractor a best value proposal for the supply and installation of three custom Noishield® FS/S Barriers on the rooftop of the R&D and Technical Services Buildings.
And, as a result, BMW is now conducting full operations in a state-of-the–art research facility with all of the attendant noise producing machinery having been effectively attenuated by IAC Noishield Barriers to community standards.
Our thanks to the Architectural team/Acoustic Treatments at IAC America and the IAC technical sales representative Mr. Bob Schmitt of QuietStar Industries in New Jersey for a job well done!
