Building IAC dreams in China

Bronx, NY (November 9)--IAC’s most exciting and comprehensive anechoic chamber project in China to date is now underway. The chamber is being constructed at Build Your Dreams (BYD) – within the R&D headquarters of their giant automotive manufacturing facility based in Shenzhen, not far from IAC China’s factory and offices. Over 150,000 people are employed at BYD, Shenzhen.

“This project for BYD is a strategic breakthrough for us in China,” said Geoff Crowhurst, Chairman of IAC China. “The automotive sector there is enjoying a boom fuelled by the country’s meteoric economic growth and now is the time for us to look to build our market share in the test chambers market. What we needed was a showcase project that could highlight our full range of capabilities. This one at BYD is it!”

The project comprises the full gamut of IAC anechoic testing technology:

  • The ‘pass by’ hemi-anechoic chamber both for 2-wheel, and 4-wheel drive buses and trucks.
  • The 2-wheel drive Vehicle Semi-Anechoic Chamber (VSAC) for general automotive testing.
  • The ‘Quiet Room’ – rather than a rolling road, this anechoic chamber tests noise emissions from stationary vehicles, in idle mode. The chamber hosts noise vibration and harshness testing allowing for fine tuning of aspects of the vehicles’ noise emissions from the sound of the engine to the closure of the doors and horn etc.
  • A test suite with two reverberation chambers and an anechoic chamber. This suite is used for the testing and development of body panels and components.
  • The “Jury Room” is constructed in a similar way to IAC studios – with modular sound-absorptive panels. Focus groups use the facility to rate the sounds emitted by vehicles: for example, the sound of the engine, indicators, and horn. Termed ‘opinion engineering’ this is useful in ‘adding value’ – or at least ‘perceived’ value to 21st century vehicles.

“The BYD project will reassure many more of China’s manufacturers who may have been a bit sceptical as to our engineering abilities. Our technology in use by one of China’s leading manufacturers will create trust and belief nationwide in the IAC promise, “ concludes Geoff Crowhurst.

The facility is scheduled for completion by June 2011.
