IAC Provide Huge Anechoic Testing Facility for Cummins Power Generation

IAC is a global leader in the design and build of anechoic testing chambers and has just completed one of the company’s largest ever facilities. The new anechoic chamber will provide a state-of-the-art engine test facility for Cummins Power Generation at their manufacturing and testing plant in Fridley, Minnesota.

Cummins Power Generation is one of the largest manufacturers of diesel and gas generator sets in the world. This multi-million project will both aid manufacturing and R&D at the site, with generator sets destined across the United States and overseas.

Located right in the heart of the local community Fridley, the company’s previous open air testing facility, was causing noise nuisance. The new facility eliminates virtually all environmental impact by keeping noise in, and also provides a perfect ‘repeatable’ sound testing environment, keeping wind and weather interference out.

The project which has taken just 13 months to complete, includes a hemi-anechoic chamber designed with 50Hz cut off to meet both UK and USA regulations, a control room where all of the air handing systems can be managed by one person plus office space for acoustic testing operatives, an open plan meeting area and the capability to add a further small anechoic testing room for smaller engines..

The project, named ‘Project Sonitus Acoustical Testing Centre’ by Cummins Power Generation, is the largest facility of its kind in the world, meeting the following ISO standards: ISO 3745 - 50Hz at 33ft, ISO 3744 - 50Hz over 6458sq ft, ISO 6798 and ISO 8528-10 in addition to EEC 200/14 and achieving a background noise level of NC20.

As turnkey providers, IAC handled all aspects of the design and build. Vince Byrne, Lead Project Manager on the project said “IAC handled all mechanical, electric, acoustic and civil aspects of the job. This project utilised all of our extensive acoustic design manufacturing expertise right across a whole range of product areas, including acoustic louvres, silencers, acoustic panels, AHUs, Metadyne® wedges and acoustic doors.”

Graham Dale, General Manager for Global Test Facilities said “Cummins chose IAC for this project as we are the only company worldwide to have done any turnkey project like this before. We’re also the only company with sufficient commercial confidence plus the right technical skills. By choosing IAC they could mitigate the risks involved.”

The Acoustical Testing Centre, was officially opened on Thursday 6th October.
