IAC’s Noisheild Barrier system for NSTAR

Bronx, NY (November 19)--Leading sound barrier manufacturer IAC America recently completed the installation of an IAC FS Noishield Barrier System at the NSTAR Transformer Substation in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The transformers in this substation were operating a noise level that exceeded the regulating noise ordinance.

NSTAR is the largest mass-based, investor-owned electric and gas utility in the U.S.. NSTAR transmits and delivers electric and gas to 1.1 million electricity customers in 81 communities and to nearly 300,000 gas customers.

Phil Hooser is IAC’s Product Manager for Barriers: “We undertook all the design, engineering, and fabrication of the Barrier Panels for this substantial project and completed the whole job within eight weeks of receiving the order. That included all the structural calculations, approval drawings, and fabrication of the structural steel. We worked very hard to meet all their requirements in terms of specification and timescale.”

IAC supplied 159 FS Noishield panels - 5 inches thick, 24 inches high (on center) and of various lengths up to 20 feet. IAC panels are constructed of cold-rolled A-60 steel, fabricated using 14 gauge materials for the solid side, and 20 gauge materials for the perforated side of the panel. Fill materials used are fiberglass, non-corrosive, resistant to attack by fungus, fire-resistant, vermin-proof and non-hygroscopic. The fill material is also free draining, self-supporting and retains physical and sound absorptive characteristics after long-term exposure to the elements. All materials have a Class A fire rating.

On completion of the project, Wellfleet’s Health and Conservation Department required a noise evaluation of the site; it clearly demonstrated compliance with 310 CMF 7.10 and Wellfleet Board of Health closed the case. A spokesperson commented: “It has been a pleasure working with you on this very complex issue. We are forever grateful for IAC’s commitment to this project and strict adherence to established timelines set by the Wellfleet Board of Health. The residents in the area have also expressed satisfaction with the success of the sound mitigations. Thank you for all of your efforts.”
