From Coast to Coast IAC Soundwall Systems Keeping the Peace

Bronx, NY -- From a new transportation facility in Ramsey New Jersey, to the FDR Drive in Manhattan, straight across the country to the city of Anaheim, California, IAC America’s Noishield® Soundwall Systems are helping keep neighborhoods quiet.

In Ramsey, a 750-foot long sound wall is a key component of the new, $39 million Regional Park-N-Ride Construction project. The wall was constructed to address residents’ concerns about noise generated from trains stopping and starting. It consists of 600 panels rising 20 feet high, which absorb train noise before it gets into the neighborhood. The Soundwall runs between the new station building and the Rte. 17 over-pass and features special anti-graffiti paint.

The FDR Drive, which runs down the east side of Manhattan is one of the New York City’s busiest thoroughfares. The City is presently tearing down and re-building part of the road, and in so-doing has to divert traffic for 10 blocks in Sutton Place, one of the City’s toniest neighborhoods. To protect residents from the traffic noise, now running ever closer to their apartments, a 20,000 square foot barrier has been temporarily installed for the duration of the reconstruction.

In Anaheim, a newly completed Soundwall System is providing a three-way win for: the neighborhood it is shielding, the Yorba Linda neighborhood across the way, and the city’s coffers. Running for 2.3 miles on Route 90 between Yorba Linda Boulevard and Imperial Highway, this Soundwall System has a two-fold effect. On one hand it absorbs the noise of nearly 100 trains each day, and also keeps it from ricocheting into the Yorba Linda neighborhood on the other side of Route 90. The Soundwall has an average height of 16 feet above the railroad rail, but varies from heights of three feet to 26 feet above.

IAC Soundwall Systems are hung on steel uprights. While most Soundwall systems are 12 feet long, IAC America’s Soundwall Systems are manufactured in 16-foot lengths. This provides a two-fold cost-saving. Because the 16-foot Soundwalls require fewer uprights, less steel is used and the installation itself is less costly.

Noishield soundwalls are low-weight and of rugged construction. They can withstand wind velocities of 110 mph. The barriers are finished with a tough, thermosetting polyester powder coating which is not damaged by the harsh cleaning chemicals used to remove spray-paint graffiti. A wide variety of standard colors allows complementary decorative schemes and attractive designs to reduce apparent wall height. Optional facings include brick, stone, stucco, wood, slate and more. And when necessary they are readily relocated.

IAC is a world leader in the manufacture of acoustical products and systems. Since its founding in 1949, the company has been recognized for both innovative solutions to unusual problems, and the creation of new or improved noise control and acoustical conditioning products. IAC’s Aero/Acoustic Laboratory provides the quality control testing necessary to ensure the accuracy of acoustical, aerodynamic, and mechanical ratings. IAC America is located att 1160 Commerce Avenue, Bronx, New York 10462-559. (718) 931-8000. Find IAC on the web at www.industrialacoustics.com.
