May 2008
Welcome to this issue of E-Bulletin.

There is little debate that the US economy is in recession and growing concern about record high commodity prices. I am confident that IAC can beat this slowdown. The upside is that all of the consultants and engineers are very busy with no sign of a slowdown on the noise control front.

Our strategy to introduce new products and enter new markets with turnkey solutions is in full swing. Our new AccuTone2 Concert Series Music Practice rooms as well as the new downward access and tegular ceiling panels are now complete and IAC is delivering product right now!

Our design team has finalized the details for our new ‘concealed’ column barrier design and has introduced barrier panels now up to 20 feet in length both 24” and 18” high units.

I am excited about the new opportunities in Power and Homeland Security and encourage all of our reps to stay focused in anticipation of one of the best second quarters in history.

Thanks and enjoy the stories.
Best Wishes

IAC BUILDS ON ITS STRENGTHS AT AMERICAN ACADEMY OF AUDIOLOGY CONFERENCE, NORTH CAROLINA

This year’s American Academy of Audiology Conference (AAA) in Charlotte, NC was another successful exhibition for IAC America.

IAC made Best in Show for displaying a fully functional AccuTone™240a series, single-wall audiometric room.

IAC’s audiometric rooms provide the highest degree of sound isolation supported with NVLAP accredited laboratory-tested performance in accordance with the USA’s ASTM E956 room test standards.

Dominick Nardi, is Product Manager Audiology: “Shows like the AAA are a great opportunity to get our technical sales representatives together, many of whom visited the stand this time, for some additional territory-specific support from the centre. IAC America had an opportunity to talk directly with our end users and get feedback on the latest equipment we are offering. Feedback from Stand visitors is always useful in identifying how we as manufacturers, can provide even better support of our new products for today’s audiologists.

“Thank you for visiting our booth at the recent AAA Conference. The show was a great success in that it allowed us to showcase not only improvements we have made in our product but also our commitment to providing you with the best product in the industry.”

IAC LAB HELPS PROVIDE COAL TO MEET US ENERGY NEEDS

IAC has recently received an order from a large coal company to silence coal mine exhaust ventilation fans. These fans provide essential fresh air into the mines.

The extracted air from the mine is moist and laden with dust, so that conventional silencers would very quickly clog as the wet dust forms on silencer baffles and blocks the perforations in the baffle skins. The solution to this problem is to install IAC’s ACFI design silencer baffles in the existing exhaust evase of the fan.

Jonathan Weinstein is IAC America’s Director of Research and Development: “ACFI attenuation is achieved using tuned cavities which are impervious to blockage caused by the wet dust.” Recently IAC proved the ability of the ACFI design to provide the specification requirement minimum of 20 dB attenuation at the blade pass frequency of 190 Hz and 15 dB at the 380 Hz first harmonic. Weinstein again: “We successfully demonstrated this performance to the acoustical consultant and our customer with a ½ scale model in the IAC Aero-Acoustic Laboratory wind tunnel.”

With approximately 315,000 Megawatts of coal-based electrical generating capacity in the United States, coal plants account for 52% of the electricity generated. The reserves of coal in the US stand at 275 billion tons, an amount that is greater than any other nation in the world. These reserves are capable of meeting domestic demand for more than 250 years at current rates of consumption.

IAC AVIATION TO UPGRADE ROLLS-ROYCE GEM FACILITY IN BRAZIL

IAC Aviation – a world leader in aero-engine testing – has clinched a major contract win from Rolls-Royce Brazil to undertake the GEM engine test facility upgrade at their facility in São Paulo, Brazil.

Won through IAC Aviation in the UK, the UK Ministry of Defence’s approved Design Authority (DA) for GEM engine test facilities, IAC Aviation was able to offer a minimal risk solution including minimising down time for this key facility.

The contract was secured against stiff opposition from several competitors.

Nick Smith, Aviation Solutions Business Manager, said: “Of course, this is a critical facility for Rolls-Royce Brazil so the project management parameters are highly demanding. As DA for the GEM we obviously have an in-depth knowledge and were ideally placed to offer an optimum and low-cost solution. We expect to deliver a first-class on-time contract.”

AIR LIQUIDE OF FRANCE CHOOSES IAC ENCLOSURES IN $1.5M CONTRACT

Giant gas supplier Air Liquide of France, Europe has awarded IAC Boët Stopson a $1.5M contract for acoustical enclosures

The substantial contract requires the design, supply and installation of a set of eight acoustical enclosures for compressors in three locations: one plant in Belgium and two others in France. These plants are built and operated by Air Liquide to supply their customers with compressed gas as a turnkey service.

The largest enclosure measures 65 feet x 36 feet x 33 feet high and they are all to achieve 71dBA at 3 feet from a 112dBA source. They are constructed using a large steel framework weighing over 100 tons, coupled with acoustic panels and a ventilation system.

David Berrier of IAC Boët Stopson said “The key to our success on this contract was our previous experience of design and project management on similar Air Liquide projects also the fact that we could offer a genuinely turnkey solution using our various European suppliers along with our site installation services. Our energetic sales approach meant we secured this contract within just a few days of receiving the initial enquiry.”

IAC Boët Stopson leads the European market in noise control solutions for the Power market.

IAC AMERICA MAKES FOOD STORE NEIGHBOURHOOD-FRIENDLY

Harris Teeter-Washington, DC, a neighbourhood fresh food market, is protecting its neighbouring community from noise thanks to IAC America.

Harris Teeter operates 168 stores across the southern states. It vouchsafes not only to nourish the communities it serves but also to be a good ‘neighbour’. So they resolved to make their new outlet in Washington both aesthetically-pleasing and acoustically-friendly.

Along with their architects, Bonduarant Associates, they joined forces with Benchmark Construction, Acoustical Design Collaborative Ltd (ADC) and IAC America (through TechStar Industries), to achieve their objectives.

Strict acoustic and aesthetic requirements for sites such as these protect the local community from noise from plant such as air conditioners, pumps, compressors and fans. Noise analysis was carried out to determine the extent of the noise treatment required. On the basis of the results IAC America then designed and constructed an unobtrusive IAC Noishield® Roof Barrier and Cladding Panel System. TechStar Industries then installed the solution.

All IAC America’s Noishield® Roof Top Barrier and Cladding Systems are designed and pre-engineered to include structural steel and support systems. This installation consisted of panels and doors for required maintenance access. The barrier was erected to optimise sound transmission loss and provide sound absorption in a durable and attractive wall system in visual harmony with the surroundings. The factory-finished panels were 5” thick and sound absorptive on one side. To this Tech-Star applied a powder-coated, perforated screen wall to match the trim of the existing building.

Phil Hooser, Product Manager, said: “A special thank you to IAC America’s Architectural/Access System teams, IAC Technical Representative Richard von Lange of TechStar Industries, Neil Thompson Shade of Acoustical Design Collaborative, and Bondurant Associates for their combined efforts in helping Washington DC’s newest neighbor, Harris Teeter ‘make the world a quieter place’.”
