2008
Welcome to our latest e-bulletin.
The global economy appears to be a ‘black hole’ of uncertainty. Economic growth contracted over the last quarter and many believe the US economy has slipped into recession, further slowed by the US Presidential election.
IAC America is entering the fourth quarter with a healthy backlog based on all of your hard work earlier this year and I am confident that IAC America will finish 2008 strong.
In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker said to Darth Vader: “I know there is still good in you…” Our challenge for the rest of the year is to remain positive, building on our accomplishments.
Enjoy the stories.
Best wishes

Kenneth DeLasho
President & General Manager

IAC AMERICA SHIELDS LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN COMMUNITIES FROM RAILROAD NOISE
Two communities affected by railroad noise near LAX Airport in California are enjoying quieter lives thanks to a FS Noishield Barrier from IAC America.
Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Metro Green-Line light rail transportation system runs south near LAX Airport. The noise generated from the rail cars was affecting the residents of Hawthorn and Segundo California.
Woodward Clyde Engineering selected IAC FS Noishield Barrier panels as the noise control product of choice for the elevated structures in these two communities. The IAC FS Noishield Barrier panels were ideal for this application due to their acoustic performance, their light weight construction and ease of installation. IAC America also supplied IAC SFS Noishield Septum/Barrier panels to be installed between Metro Green-line tracks in one area to provide absorptive treatment for both sides of the barrier system. These were to protect an office building immediately adjacent to the track structure.
IAC, in partnership with the IAC representative CE Pickup, the acoustical consultant - Woodward Clyde Engineering and Metro Builders & Engineers, together designed and installed the Barrier System. Approximately ¾ mile long x 20’ high the Barrier System was installed from a high rail truck using a small hoist. There was down time for the transportation authority.
Each 5” thick Barrier panel is self-draining and the absorptive side is rated NRC 1.05. The rugged panels are easy to install and available in 24” and 18” heights up to 16’ long. The panels go through a five-step cleaning process and are factory-finished with tough, thermosetting polyester powder coat available in hundreds of colors and patterns.
The Metro Green-Line Light Rail project won a design award for California cities. The residents and city officials in both communities were very pleased with the results achieved by the IAC Barrier System.

NOISELOCK DOORS AND WINDOWS FOR NEW WNYC STATION STUDIOS
When WNYC, America’s flagship National Public Radio station, moved out of their previous home of 50 years, they turned to IAC and QuietStar Industries for acoustic Noise-Lock® doors and windows.
Relocating a radio station in the digital age necessitates vision and funding. Fortunately WNYC has both. Turning the 7th, 8th and 9th floors of a Tribeca warehouse into a state-of-the art broadcast center meant gutting the floors, pouring isolated slabs and building from the inside out. To broadcast and record the award-winning programs, they needed studios, edit rooms, production rooms and more. To get natural light right into the center of the floors and to improve indoor environmental quality, they needed lots of windows.
In the end, they used 40 Noise-Lock® STC 51 doors and 40 STC 57 Noise-Lock® windows. Some of the windows were double-sloped and as wide as 11 feet with a frame depth of 18 inches.
QuietStar Industries was on site during construction, and developed a strong relationship with the constructors, the architects and the client. The result is a beautiful studio with IAC America products at every corner. The reward? Another order for 13 more Noise-Lock® windows and 4 more doors for the first ever, ground floor performance space, where New York passers-by can see, from the sidewalk, on-going live broadcasts, through, of course, IAC windows. The performance center is due to open in 2009.
Thanks to IAC technical representative QuietStar Industries and IAC’s Access System team for a job well done!
IAC…making the world a quieter place!

IAC EXPANDS INTO AUSTRALIA WITH THE ACQUISITION OF COLPRO
IAC has long set its sights on having an Australian operation and on 1st October the group announced the acquisition of 100% of the shares of the Sydney, Australia-based noise control company Colpro Engineering (Australia) Pty.
Colpro is the leading designer and manufacturer of high performance silencers, acoustics, exhaust systems and thermal insulation blankets for the marine, mining and transport industries in Australia.
Group President and CEO, Brian Quarendon, said that the Colpro acquisition will offer tangible benefits to many customers throughout the Pacific Rim. He explains: “The product ranges of the two businesses are highly complementary and by combining the two companies’ pretty impressive portfolio of products, all of which have been thoroughly tested and proven will increase product choice and standards of service to customers in Australasia. Also noise legislation and product specification vary tremendously from one nation to another and customers in Australia want advice from trained, experienced engineers who are familiar with the local market. Now IAC can provide this effectively.”
For more information on Colpro visit http://www.colpro.com.au and look out for their new pages on our global website soon.
NOISE FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA’S METRO GOLD LINE ABATED BY SOUND BARRIER WALL
IAC America, in cooperation with Ace Fence Company and the IAC Representative CE Pickup has fabricated and installed a second sound barrier wall for the Pasadena Metro Gold Line in Southern California.
The Light Transit rail is approximately 13 miles long and extends from Union Station in the city to Sierra Madre Villa BLVD in Pasadena.
This extension of this project required more than 700 IAC FS Noishield Barrier panels.
Each 5” thick panel is self-draining and the absorptive side is rated NRC 1.05. These rugged panels are easy to install and available in 24” and 18” heights up to 16’ long. The panels endure a five-step cleaning process and are factory finished with tough, thermosetting polyester powder coat available in hundreds of colors and patterns.
According to Ace Fence Company the IAC FS Barrier panels are lighter and easier to install than traditional concrete barriers. By including an Anti-Graffiti treatment into the powder coating process, the IAC FS Noishield barrier panels are much easier to keep clean and maintain. The residents are very pleased with the results both acoustically and aesthetically. These IAC FS Noishield barrier panels should be an attractive solution to the environmental concerns for years to come.

IAC AMERICA WELCOMES TONY ARGYROU FROM IAC UK
IAC America is pleased to welcome Tony Argyrou, Project Manager extraordinaire. Tony is visiting us from our UK office and brings with him more than 25 years of experience in a wide range of IAC products and services.
He managed the Canary Wharf Program which contains the heart of London’s financial district and is located in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. Centered on the old West India docks in the London Docklands, Canary Wharf contains the UK’s three tallest buildings.
During the Phase II construction around 2000 – 2002 IAC designed supplied and installed more than (600) on Floor Quiet Flow Air Handling Units complete with fans, drives, cooling coils, filters, silencers and AHU housings, all designed to NR-35 in the office area. Tony was instrumental in the success of this project, according to Geoff Crowhurst, Director of the UK Acoustics Division.
Tony has been an inspiration at IAC America and has volunteered to help project manage our new open office renovation at Commerce Avenue.
“His positive attitude and great communication skills are an inspiration to all,” said Brian Schellati, Business Unit Manager IAC America.

PG&E CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF IAC AMERICA’S NOISHIELD FS/S BARRIER SYSTEMS
IAC has completed the supply and installation of another FS/S Noishield barrier system for Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) – this time in Gustine California. The source of the noise complaint, were two large transformers approx. 45’ and 70’ from the property line.
The closest resident was within 15’ of the property line adjacent to the transformers. IAC provided complete turnkey services including design, engineering, foundations, structural supporting steel, acoustic panels and installation in order to address the low frequency noise generated from the transformers that exceeded the local noise ordinance.
PG&E presented the IAC Architectural team an additional challenge: to control the run-off rain water from escaping in to the adjacent properties prior to being filtered into the on site water treatment area. To this end, IAC designed the foundation with an integrated curb to be both structurally sound and environmentally compliant.
The IAC Architectural team consisted of the following:
• IAC Acoustic Treatments – design, engineering, project management, fabrication and coordination
• West General – IAC sales representative
• Dale Christian Engineering – design/engineering review, CAPE
• DC Construction – Foundations & curb work
• Easter Construction – installation of structural steel and IAC FS/S Noishield panels
This 12-foot high IAC FS/S Noishield for PG&E was designed to protect the community from unwanted sound; it also contained potentially contaminated water from adjacent properties and also acted as a security fence to keep out trespassers.
IAC FS/S barrier systems optimize sound transmission loss and sound transmission properties in a durable and aesthetically-pleasing wall system to be in harmony with the surroundings. According to the resident in the adjacent property; the IAC barrier wall has exceeded expectation with regard to the noise reduction.
